but we're not talking about you or even what the vectra driver should have done, we're talking about what we can do to not get into bad situations in the first place.

In those circumstances, it is the action of a poor, aggressive, selfish, boorish driver to tailgate the car ahead in the way Sixy described.

yes it is and it's also completely beside the point. If Sixy had either waited a few seconds to overtake (or better yet, eased off on approach to the hgv) or sped up once overtaking then Vectraman would not have been able to tailgate her. Isn't it much better to err on the side of caution than get nailed by some idiot at 85mph?

In the interests of sanity and goodwill to all contributors, I'm going to close this thread.

If anyone wants it re-opened, (especially the main contributors), please send me a PM.

If nobody else thinks it's reasonable to look 200m behind you before commencing an overtake then I despair and it's obviously time to give up and find some people who are genuinely interested in improving driving standards.

As I see it: in the described scenario, it is wrong to be overtaking at a differential speed greater than 20 mph; to assume otherwise is suicidal, not because it is inherently dangerous but because the driver wanting to pull out won’t expect such speeds from other drivers - due to the UK motorway speed limit being set so low. Germany is different because drivers know there could be vehicles closing at onehellofarateofknots, hence they are far indeed more cautious (you can trust me on that one.)

Standing on the brakes on approach to other such vehicles from such speeds is also far from safe, so if the Vectra driver really did catch up that quickly then IMO it’s safe to assume that driver was driving without consideration/recklessly/dangerously.
