Fair point. I wrote my last post in a hurry, so missed the subtleties of the argument
I tend to look for a gap which will allow me to pull out (in the car or the truck) without causing anyone to think "fuck me, where did he come from?", as I'm sure do the rest of you. There are motorists who will be surprised no matter how much warning you give them, and there are also motorists who stick rigidly to the middle lane even if the outside lane is clear and they can see you want to overtake something, but basically, if I look in my mirror and see someone hooning up the outside, I slow down and let him or her go. If I see someone crawling past inch by inch and there's still enough room for me to get out without pulling into their braking distance, then I go for it. Which I think is pretty much what the rest of you are saying. :)

I think it boils down to 'process maneuvers'. P2 (L3, 90 mph) has only to maintain speed to pass the L2 truck from L3 whilst P1 will have to observe behind, signal, change lane and accelerate to complete the same maneuver. Thus P2 only requires one process and P1 requires four. If I was P1, my rear observation would include the rapid closing velocity of P2 and I would delay my overtake until P2 had passed me. As driver of P2, I would hope that the rear observation had been made, but would be prepared to brake if necessary.

All too often, drivers think that their indicator is some sort of 'badge of office', the operation of which means 'I have right-of-way and I'm coming out' or, worse still, are members of the 'maneuver, signal, mirror' club.

If we are going to be policed by machines instead of coppers, someone has to invent a w@nker camera...

Perhaps I would say priority belongs to the driver who would otherwise have to brake the most.

Too difficult to judge on the fly.

KISS
