From today's telegraph:

new speed trap legislation will soon make driving one mph over the limit a statutory offence, adds Michael Kemp.

The move, threatening millions more motorists with fines and licence endorsement, was hidden in changes announced by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling on September 1. Mr Darling is preparing to make legal history by setting in law that 21, 31, 41, 51 and 71mph are illegal speeds.

Dr Peter Russell, professor of road safety and director of the Driver Education Research Foundation, said: "Some police forces are going to give drivers a hammering for being just a fraction over the limit. It is very worrying that drivers will not know what tolerance, if any, is being applied. They will be for ever taking their eyes off the road.

"That will be dangerous. It is a recipe for creating more accidents. Already there are too many speed cameras questionably sited in needlessly varying speed limits, raising suspicion that they exist only to trap drivers and raise money."

Best start on the bumper stickers: look at your speedo not the road; it's safer for your licence.

But I'm not at all sure that it contains even a single sentence that's entirely correct. :(

Er, driving at 31 mph in a 30 limit always has been a statutory offence. The ACPO guidelines are precisely that, guidelines, and do not exclude the possibility of prosecutions at lower speeds if there are aggravating factors.

It remains to be seen whether the police will in practice lower prosecution thresholds. Clearly it is something that needs to be watched carefully, but the article quoted doesn't imply that it definitely will happen.

Thats as maybe but when did you see a speedo which has 1mph increments. The accuracy still remains at 10% based on tyre rolling radius, measurement accuracy etc.

I sustpect this ties in with the new nonsence of going for "training rather than points" speed indoctrination for those caught just over the limit. This has been announced for Leicester. I was wondering how the Scamera crooks were going to cope with losing revenue to these courses. Now I know. The won't they will be processing even more motorists.

More jobs for the boys I think.
