I do not know if this has been covered here before but I thought I would mention a worrying new approach I have seen the scammers take.

That is the placement of speed cameras on very tall poles (about the height of the top of a first floor window) I can see why there are doing this as the first one I have seen was beside the Cambridge estate in Kingston upon Thames some where no normal camera would last more than a weekend.

Now I do not agree with the vandalising of privet property although seeing a burnt out camera does give me a warm glow inside but it not the way to tackle the plague that is speed cameras.

But the consequence is cameras all but hidden from view by there height as what normal safe driver is scanning 20 foot of the ground for possible danger. But that just what people are going to start doing to avoid getting caught be this type of dangerous implementation of an already inherently unsafe system.

I also wonder if these cameras have been designed and calibrated to operate from a downward facing angle.

They normally work from sensors buried in the road, and take digital pictures that are transmitted to the center, therefore require no regular maintenance. The intention is to be more efficient, accurate and vandal proof*.

* I do not condone vandalism of any public property, but a 1" chisel and a heavy hammer might cause damage to the surface mounted sensor...

I know the estate you speak of, and you are right, it is a dive.

However I do not believe the "vandals" in that neck of the woods are that stupid. I'll bet it's not long before somebody realises that you can incapacitate a camera a lot quicker with a pipe cutter than what it takes to throw a tyre over one, fill it with petrol, and toss a match in.

These poles are rather large boxes section I could barley get my arms around.

But what it is to be British we have the best scum in the world I am sure they will find a way.

While it is very easy (and very legal) to obtain all the components required to build a bomb, I doubt that the current crop of Tony Blair's education system have the requisite intellectual capacity to actually build one.

On the plus side, if they do manage it then they will probably blow themselves up in the process

I don't know but there has to be scope for a number plate hood to mask it from that angle.

These are SpeedCurb devices. (or RedGuard or RedSpeed if used on traffic lights or traffic lights with speed cameras)
They are made by a company called RedSpeed but used to be made by Monitron.

They use road sensors and I have heard an ADSL or ISDN connection to sent the photos back.
They are "vandal proof" which I'm sure would sound like a chalenge to some...

Just have a look at the topic "Divine Intervention" on the CSCP Refugees forum - appears these RedSpeed Scams aren't vandal proof afterall
