Back to my observation of classic stupidity - Ted.

You should know this one. The Lymm Road A6144 curves to the left. Not what I call a severe curve and you can take it easy enough at 40 mph and that's the limit here as well. There's a bit of an island at the junction and if you want to turn left or turn right towards Carrington and the M60 - tight fit but it is two way traffic. Lot of people seem to get confused about this all the same from my observation in general.

This time I was waiting to turn left. A car turned left into the filter to go to Dunham or Altrrincham via the lanes. A van used the filter to make the right.

Behind the car making the left was another car. Tailgating - I just managed to glimpse before the van obscured my vision. Car was making a right. Driver saw the car use the left filter and started to turn. Dirver was in process of this when the tailgating car appeared. My impression is he accelerated sharpish when the Mondeo turned left. The driver making the right looked very scared but he accelerated out of the danger and I reckon the miss of a head on - which may have included the waiting me in the fall out - was just centimetres.

I think this was more a misread of a busy situation on the one hand - but do wonder about observation skills of those more immediately close to collision.

By all means post my observation to the forum for discussion.

Sis goes off on personal family stuff at this point :lol:

But I decided to post it up for discussion anyway.

I will say you have a fair view if you turn right at this junction - but view is obscured if some one waits in the two way filter to turn right from my own experience of visiting Dunham and a pal in Lymm.

Sounds like the driver turing right may have been distracted by something :scratchchin:

Surely he saw the car entering the bend from the right hand turn position?

Can appreciate J's view was obscured by the waiting car in the filter and her view of the bend and approaching traffic may be tricky here for a left turn though.

J does mention the car heading straight on accelerated into the bend - also not quite wise if this junction was busy - as I recall it's a fairly sharp bend.

I haven't got a very good picture of this one - I don't really understand the position of the island, nor the width of the road.

Anyone got a plan / picture / improved description / anything?

My sister finally managed to upload some photos to our hoster.

I decided to post up a few so that people can see the layout. She is baffled as to how the driver missed seeing the oncoming car - and she thinks that on the morning in question - the junction was very busy and the bend for the right turners would perhaps hide an approaching vehicle beyond the left filter.

Had there been a collision - could have rebounded into her as she was waiting to turn left.

My sister says the approaching van is where the car was when the driver made the right turn. Could have been nasty and we are wondering how come the driver did not see. My sister said the shock and astonishment on the person's face made it clear to her that the person had somehow missed seeing the vehicle approach. She thinks it was a combination of seeing one driver enter the left and the oncoming car had perhaps accelerated when he turned.

But we still think it worth exploring how come he was not seen by the right turner. Sis thinks - trying to be fair to the right turner who almost caused a real nasty - he was close as she only just glimpsed he was behind the left turner and decided to wait.

Lot of hazard potential at this junction too. :roll:

Yup. I can now understand the text of the original e-mail. Photo 1 was all it took.

Working from photo 1, two vehicles were coming toward the photographer in close formation. Another car on the main road just past where photographer sat was waiting to turn right. Front marker of the two coming this way started his left turn - to the far side of the island as we look at it, possibly having swung out or been out toward the road crown. The one waiting to turn right made his move - to our side of the island, not having seen the tailgater, who in turn probably never saw the right turner - near miss - right turner gunned it to get his back end clear of the tailgater who may have moved out to the crown of the road to help with the miss.

It is possible that left verge street furniture (ie the road sign) may have partially obscured the right-turner's view ahead (further around the bend). This is best seen in photo 2.

The skids in photo 4 are a possible indicator of a poorly engineered junction. What lies shortly before on that road (ie behind the photographer of photo 1)?

Sis has some more photos apparently.

She says road behind where she was standing on photo one continues to curve ...

It's 40 mph and she says she never drives at that speed at this point. Ironically - wide stretch is 30 mph and talivan targeted .. per her reports to us :wink:

In which case, the skid is quite possibly a result of coming up behind one waiting for it to turn right, but fully expecting the turning vehicle to be on its way by thew time he arrived, not realising the car had to wait, being blindspotted to the approaching vehicle.
