What do you mean accidental? I thought that it was deliberately started, as did many people at the time... http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/society_culture/society/great_fire_05.shtml

Excerpts from your reference:
Quote:
At the end of September, a Parliamentary Committee was appointed to investigate the fire. During the investigation a French Protestant watchmaker, Robert Hubert, confessed to having deliberately started the fire at the bakery with 23 conspirators. His colleagues claimed he was unbalanced and the details of his confession changed as flaws were continually unearthed. The Earl of Clarendon commented that 'Neither the judges, nor any present at the trial did believe him guilty; but that he was a poor distracted wretch, weary of his life, and chose to part with it'. He was helped by a jury - that included three Farynors - and was hanged at Tyburn.

and
Quote:
... the cause of the fire became the grassy knoll of late seventeenth century conspiracy theorists ...

Now, I like a good conspiracy theory, but do wonder whether the fire was started deliberately or whether this was "expedient justice" preceding, and in the same vein as, modern-day miscarriages (such as the Guildford Four, the Birmingham Six, et al.) where the truth seemed somehow less important than satisfying the public "blood lust"...

It was supposed to be a flippant remark with a subtle highlighting of the way that it is often convenient to use emotive subjects for political ends :) perhaps you should also include speed cameras in your list as the concept of justice goes out of the window in response to the families of accident victims baying for blood.

No, TSM is from Chesterfield. He is probably Tony Benn. :)

Whatever you think of his politics; Tony Benn is an erudite and urbane man - not adjectives that spring to mind when considering tsm.

Actually, I agree with you about Tony Benn. He does, at least, have principles which he doesn't change in the wind of fashion or expediency.

Although I may not agree with his politics, I have almost infinitely more respect for Mr Benn than for Mr Livingstone.

What is your qualification??

What books can you quote???

I seem to remember entering into a previous altercation with you, in which you claimed that your 'maths was better than your English'.

When I set a simple (year 9) algebraic problem for you to consider, you posted a reply with some complete mathematical gibberish interspersed with your normal gobbledygook.

So what are you good at? Which tracts can you quote? Can you actually spell 'quote'? Do you actually drive, or does your tricycle have mirrors and streamers on the handlebars?...

As to the satisfaction of Godwin's Law in this case; in my opinion, Ken Livingstone is not a Nazi, Fascist, Marxist, Stalinist, Leninist or any other embodiment of political evil...

HE IS A GOOD, OLD-FASHIONED, SELF-SATISFYING, SELF CONGRATULATORY, MONEY-GRUBBING, HORSESHIT-SPOUTING, 'I'M-ALRIGHT-JACK-BOLL0CKS-TO-YOU' GRADE-A PRICK!

Oh, sorry, it's only cars over 8 years old. Well that's still shot of most of the taxis.

Sorry, Pete - in the weird and wonderful world of Mr Newt, taxis aren't cars. They are public service vehicles, and therefore OK no matter what they do, or how old, decrepit and polluting they are.

What he and his like really hate is the thought that people can get into a car and actually go where they want, when they want. This is total anathema to people like Livingstone who, in their fossilized Stalinistic way, want to control every aspect of our lives.

A quote from one of them (a north-east Labour MP): "I hate private cars with a vengeance". I would be interested to know what justification he has for this statement - but I think I can guess.

(Incidentally, my private car hasn't got a vengeance - does anyone know where I can get one?)

You seem to completely fail to see that whilst all these pedantic, petty new laws and schemes will achieve nothing towards making problems disappear, they are very effective at reigning people like you a step closer to the type of political regime that good people of this country and others have given their lives to protect against.

I did think the same thing but now wonder if we're not so much losing our freedom so much as coming to terms with the fact we really never were free to begin with.

What I'm wondering is why London of all places doesn't have some sort of park and ride system, such as with Maglevs ferrying people into the centre?

It does. You park at Southampton Airport and ride the train to Waterloo.

well, the idea is with an integrated public transport infrastructure you shouldn't need to use the car at all, but it needs to get a lot better.

One problem is a number of commuters are affluent people who simpley aren't going to jump out of their s-classes and onto the bus, and you can't blame them. something else that could be experimented with is luxury coaches running from the more affluent areas to the city, these could have onboard catering, wifi internet etc and provide a viable premium option for city types.

You'd need many very large park and rides, and these would create their own local congestion problems, as thousands of cars head for them and try to fill them. Then you'd need many, high-frequency, high-capacity vehicles to ferry all those people to the centre, and to achieve an acceptable turn-around time.
In order to get around all those, and associated problems, you'd need many, many much smaller parking areas, much more spread out and much closer to the centre, and serviced by many different forms of transport to ferry the people to the centre. Oh, wait a minute......

oh, it's doomed to fail then:(

a lot of visitors to london already do park and ride anyway, simply using outlying train stations, this could be encouraged with better facilities etc but the problem is not enough capacity, someone worked out if 5% of car drivers used public transport instead the already overloaded system wouldn't be able to cope, yet it wouldn't make much difference to the roads. Like it or not ken, cars are are vital part of our transport infrastructure.
