These are two examples of new TV ads being shown in the Irish Republic. They look very good and avoid a patronising or hectoring tone. It makes a welcome change from simplistic "slow down" and "don't drink and drive" messages.

Cornering

Keep your distance

There are apparently a couple more on overtaking safely and turning right but they aren't online at the moment.

Brilliant.

Fancy the Irish showing us the way... :hehe:

Seriously - we (Britain) should be ashamed...

Very Good.

Sensible advice that may actually have a positive effect on road safety and driver behaviour. Wow! a first.

For once a road 'safety' advert that actually can be acurately described as 'road safety' and not mindless inaccurate drool.

Not even a whiff of 'if you drive at 31mph you'll kill me whereas driving at 30mph exactly is safe for all conditions' type PROPAGANDA that the current 'THINK' campaign seems to reek of.

That's it, I'm moving to Ireland. Along with the far superior Guinness over there, those ads have convinced me

The Irish are also much keener than the Brits on building new roads at the moment :)

Isn't that because as a deprived country they benefit from EU investment just like Spain and other countries that are also investing heavily in infrastructure.

Interesting (or do I mean confusing) that Ireland is building more roads - presumably because of the economic benefits - but the UK is trying to cut down on road usage and builds almost none.

Bravo to the Irish. These sensible ads are in stark contrast to the latest offering from Somerset County Council, plastered on buses (surprise, surprise) county-wide:

"Convert your speed or we'll convert your car! If you are in a collision over 30mph and spinal injury is suspected, Fire and Rescue Services will cut the roof off your car"

Am I alone in finding this advertisment bullying, hectoring, patronising and just plain cretinous?

Absolutely superb! Safety ads written by drivers for drivers. Nice, basic format and the 'expect the unexpected' tagline is a work of genius. The multi-frame adds depth to the message as well.

The 'Think!' campaign is starting to come up with good ads, but these beat it into a cocked hat...

Bravo!

No. It's highly insulting too.

Irish roads were absolutely terrible until fairly recently... There are N roads and R roads (as far as I remember)... The joke was the N roads were 'Not so bad' and the R roads were 'Really bad'... During my last trip across the border I was pleasantly surprised, they really have improved them, even in Donegal, which isn't exactly the hub of the universe...

So far I haven't experienced driving across the border myself, I might try some day when I get a chance, would be nice to experience that...

Over here we have a few road safety ads, although we don't have as much emphasis on speeding... Moreso 'Never ever drink and drive', 'always wear a seatbelt', 'bike safely', 'pay attention or pay the price'... They all have various accidents caused by faults in people's driving or behaviour as a passenger... There is also an advert with these two school kids 'courtin' as they would say here... And they're texting each other and the boy goes to cross, and well, thud... Emphasis is also put on the green cross code and stuff for younger kids...

So I guess our road safety campaigns are alright...

There is one which puts emphasis on speed, I've just remembered... But, it's a young driver, and he drives too fast for the conditions (country lane), hits a crest, loses control and goes skidding into a tree side on, killing the girl friend... But I guess thats 'excessive speed for the conditions' and isn't really saying 'ohhh, drive at 30 and you're safe, drive at 31 and you're a dangerous driver'...

Mike
