Whilst heading into London on the M4 at the weekend, I noticed a newly planted Monitron next to Heston services, replacing the Gatso which was removed a while ago (and there was me foolish enough to think it wouldn't end up being replaced...). Didn't think anything more of it at the time, but I've just been hit with a thought - why was it located in the central reservation???

The old Gatso was next to the hard shoulder, and whilst I realise the digital nature of the Monitrons means there's no need for physical access to change films, it still strikes me as odd to place it in the middle of the motorway when it could just as easily cover the eastbound 60mph lanes from the existing hard shoulder site. I can't imagine the risk of vandalism would be so high on a motorway camera for that alone to warrant the central placement, so I hope this doesn't indicate they're considering enforcement of the westbound NSL lanes... Came home a different route, so I don't know if there's any markings or sensor strips on the w/b carriageway - anyone else been past there recently?

Looking at it from the Scamerati's viewpoint, I daresay they perceive a centrally mounted weapon as more versatile and less prone to direct attack from the captain gatso brigade.

The quid pro quo is that, once nobbled, they will need to seek a greater level of permission to fix or replace them as it will involve substantial carriageway disruption. Sooo... thinking caps on...

Paintballs would be one form of countermeasure, delivered A-team style from behind the driver  Unlike those on the roadside which can be wiped clean with a turps rag, cleaning off one of these would involve roping off two fast lanes of motorway for probably the best part of a mile each side.
