Hi - I'm back on the website. You may recall my series of posts when I was learning to pass my advanced driving test in July 2005.
Well now I am on to the next stage - I volunteered and therefore I am training to be what the IAM call a "Qualified Observer" which is basically an Advanced Driving Instructor (unpaid).

My local group got a batch of new associates (trainees) recently who have paid their £85 and in mid-April were allocated to their observers. My associate is doing his test tomorrow so that is really my first big test of being an observer too. I am pretty confident that he is going to pass (more than he is).

Anyway I would like to comment for other people's interest on what occurs and has occurred along the way.

Nick

Yes please. I expect a 1,000 word essay by 1pm. At the latest. :D

Pursuant to my original post, my associate passed his test with flying colours. Phew!!!! :D

It turns out I was guiding an ex-police superintendent.

The basis of my guidance was to concentrate on praising the associate for what he did well and not nit-picking on the faults. This approach seemed to work. In training for my own test, last year, my observer's approach was to find fault wherever he could (as does my trainer of me as an observer) and I needed the re-assurance of posters on this website such as In-Gear that I was doing things right.

I am endeavouring now with other like-minded members of my IAM group to get this sort of attitude changed.
