Hi, I was just looking for a bit of advice.....
Driving down the M62 yesterday, there are roadworks where it goes into two lanes. Normally on the M62, if there are temp speed changes, they put up the red and white speed limits. I was concentrating on the road and getting into the right lanes, with people up my backside when i'm travelling at 70, and didn't notice the yellow and black max speed sign at 50. I immediatly slowed down, and so did most of the drivers behind me. If I got caught, could I be fined/prosecuted for this?
As I was driving under the bridge, I noticed a cop car driving along. Don't know if they had stopped to catch some drivers....
Haven't had any speeding offences before so a bit worried....the yellow/black speed limit signs aren't very clear as these were the same colour as the road directions/lane advisors.\
Thanks :?

Mandatory speed limit signs are ALWAYS black figures / white background / red circle ( like :30: :40: :50: ). Anything else is purely advisory.

You should be fine.

Well, if that isn't an outstanding example of the climate of fear and uncertainty (and therefore unsafe driving) engendered by the widespread use of scameras I don't know what is.

I know the stretch you mean, was down that way the other day actually. Those aren't legal speed limit signs (advisory only) and have been there for ages.

I usually go through them at 70ish, as do half the other cars there, while those in the inside lane doing 50 give us evil stares and piss off truck drivers.

Some of these advisory limits can be as low as 10 mph on single carriageway roads so it's best to use your commonsense and assess the hazard rather than just comply with the advice.

Relax - we do not prosecute for being above the advisory speed - we tend to use discretion

If it were obvious that you were behaving dangerously - ie - cointinuiung to drive at 70 mph or higher in a dense fog or driving rain - we would probably have words about that.

But sometimes we will sometimes request an advisory if debris has been reported and we have a maintenance guy out there. But area is coned off in plenty of time and most drivers do see the hazard in good time anyway. I think the frustration sets in when some numpty forgets to switch them off again  Yep - I will not deny it - it's careless and it does not help ... and can lead to incidents by virtue of "Cry Wolf"

A's right - you apply COAST and assess the hazard potential looming as a continuum ahead of you as your limit point (distance in which you can see to be clear will be moving with you!)

But girlygirldriver - you'll be fine - relax and I look forward to your joining in the debates on here :welcome: We need more young ladies on here
