Just round the corner from my house is the A27 at Mansbridge which is a narrow single carriageway road with 40mph limit. This is a very busy road in the rush hours and when there were emergency roadworks on it a while back there was total chaos for miles around.

The council, in its wisdom, agreed some time ago to place two bus stops directly opposite each other in this area and this is just about OK because there is reasonable visibility eastbound and you can overtake a stationary bus quite safely while observing errant pedestrians crossing in front of the bus.

An island is now being built in the middle of the road at the bus stops. This will stop any overtaking and all traffic will then move at the speed of the slowest bus. Still, I'm moving house soon.

Malcolm - had something similar for years - 300 yds from the junction of our ring road is a bus stop , with an island opposite it - bus stops - traffic piles up behind it and blocks the road junction completely. At rush hour it's really great .Then , about a year or so ago , this junction was altered to try and get more throughput by making road either side 3 lane,( one right turn) merging in turn straight on. Suddenly it was discovered that the right turn filter was not ( as designed) variable . Admission came then that "perhaps the sensors were damaged during thr roadworks" ---

To date , we see truvellos getting sensors laid in the road - might be an idea perhaps to use the same idea to fix the sensors for the right turn - or perhaps this is too sensible and simple ??

I live near there. Works started earlier this week... CHAOS!!! They weren't even working on the road; they were working on the verge.

Southampton City Council have done a similar thing on Central Bridge; a bus stop with a large traffic island next to it, filling the middle hatched out lane of three! Chaos. Southampton's policy is an anti-car one; I've had it confirmed by a whistleblower from the council.

Looks like they're poisoning neighbouring local authorities too. Well, I knew that when they remodelled the A27/A3035 junction at Tesco Express in West End. Formerly an adequate junction it is now heavily congested and inefficient, especially with the protected right turns that people sometimes ignore.
