Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to look into some of them.

I have a couple of CDs by Lana Lane which feature Arjen Anthony Lucassen, although I tend to find music with a lot of contrast between light and shade isn't ideal for the car.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'contrast between light and shade'. If you mean sudden changes in the music's volume/intensity/pace then I can see your point, though I'm not sure I agree with it. The change is good for keeping you alert.

The best "driving music" is anything without drums, because drums bring out the worst in blokes. Slow, acoustic Neil Young tracks are best. The best "lay-by music" (which music aficionados recognise as a different genre) is shit-kicking rock and roll, such as the Blue Oyster Cult or the Sex Pistols, or the electric Neil Young.
Not sure I agree with this. Back in my younger days (I'd probably get called a chav now, though my Ford Escort did not ever have a bean-can fitted or any "styling" mods aside from clear indicators and a set of tasteful alloys) I fitted a better sound system to my car, this did include a 12" subwoofer in the boot and some 6x9s in the shelf (and a DIY kill switch in the dash to kill either just the sub or the sub and 6x9s so that I didn't have to faff very much when entering a residential area). My more boring and more sensible friend (he drove a Nissan Micra by choice) was amazed when I showed it to him, commenting that it made my driving slower and smoother. I was listening to happy hardcore back then, notorious for it's fast 4-beat kick drum.
Even today, if I notice my driving standard or concentration slipping and there is no immediate place to stop, I find some loud and bangy music helps a great deal. Certainly better than Red Bull. You don't have to actually listen to it on a concious level so it helps if it's music you already know. In some ways the simpler tracks are better than complicated and intricate ones (Hardcore Vibes by Dune is an excellent choice. I'm convinced they made that on an Amiga in 4 channel .MOD format, yet it sounds so good)
I guess I'm just not really into rock music, even if that Ayreon album describes itself as a Rock Opera, though I am listening to a little more as I get older. Maybe I'll investigate my dad's music collection one day.
