Quote:
Around 3,600 motorists each day are triggering the speed cameras in the M1 widening works.

But police say they are not prosecuting everyone who breaks the limit.

There is a 40mph limit through the works which is being enforced with cameras that measure the average speed of cars.

Police have confirmed that 2.4 per cent of cars are travelling over that speed.

With an average of 150,000 vehicles using that section of the motorway daily, this works out at 3,600.

But Herts Police says it would be 'unreasonable' to fine each of these motorists.

Instead, between the cameras becoming active on April 29 and the second week of June, 3,360 tickets were issued, bringing in just over £200,000 in fines.

Is this a shift in policy..........

Hmm, presumably SPECS only retains vehicle data if the calculated speed is above the prosecution threshold? And presumably the threshold in this case is set to something like 45+? So does this mean 3,600 vehicles have been monitored exceeding both the 40 limit AND the prosecution threshold - meaning the actual number of vehicles exceeding the limit is likely to be much higher but unrecorded. Or does SPECS keep data on every vehicle, in which case Herts Plod are merely confirming that they only NIP vehicles travelling over the prosecution threshold? Or is it just a slightly badly worded article which is leaning towards the facts but not quite reaching them all...

But police say they are not prosecuting everyone who breaks the limit,
such as policemen and senior police officers caught breaking the speed limit when not on an emergency call.

Having driven that part myself recently, I've often seen quite a few cars doing 50 or so. I wonder if most of the people that were caught speeding were speeding when there were no workmen around.

Of course, the 40 limit, in my mind is just a complete joke. It's just painfull to keep to it when there is little traffic and no workmen around. Still, money is always the loudest voice, so as long as speed limits are kept unreasonable low then there will always be plenty of motorists who take their chances.

Drove it at night soon after the cams were installed - thoughts - too many vehicles stuck together - from my point of view - too much speedo watching , vehicles braking indiscrimately - with eyes on speedos - surprised that accident rate not higher .

Found it difficult to keep to low limit , with no reference points .

What's the story here? Are they just playing silly buggers with words / spin / PR?

Like 'all those speeders' are within the standard ACPO prosecution threshold, with only the 3,360 above it?

I suspect that there's less to this than meets the eye. In which case, what's the real story we're being distracted from?

Went past another accident in the roadworks today, where a foreign HGV had crashed into a car. It's a good thing the safety cameras were watching over the road to stop this from happening.

Would they not set the prosecution threshold much lower for SPECS cameras? As car speedos should be reading a little high, and a momentary lapse of concentration resulting in a slightly higher speed for a short period won't have much impact on the average speed, everyone who attempts to keep their indicated speed to 40 ought to have an average below 40. I always assumed (and I'm willing to admit possibly totally incorrectly) that there would be close to zero tolerance with SPECS cameras, so I aim to never let my speedo indicate higher than the speed limit while driving through a SPECS section.

I think that these 40mph limits on motorways are totally out of control, though. Even with the roadworks, these roads are safer than 60mph limit roads I drive on every day. And don't get me started on the 20mph limits that we now have on near enough every single road in the town I live in, even what I would class as "main" roads, I suppose we'll be getting SPECS cameras on those as well at some point.

Well I am shocked.

If speed Kills and 3600 people are speeding through these road works a day, we should have carnage, there should be hundreds of thousands of dead children on this stretch of road.

Oh what was that??/

Speed only kills sometimes.....? Oh I think I understand your straightforward and useless soundbite now MrBliar
