I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I understand that a speed camera of whatever type has to be sited within the speed limit that it is monitoring. Is that correct and if so, what if the camera is actually on a different road that has a different speed limit?

There are some examples (on these pages) of speed camera vans parked on road bridges across, for example, dual carriageways - where presumably a different speed limit could apply?

In terms of fixed cameras, I believe the regulations are that the camera must be within 10 feet of the carriageway (can anyone confirm this? Camera Operator?) but I've never heard of a fixed camera covering more than one road? Is there a specific example you have in mind?

That's exactly what I'm getting at! Do you know if there is any legislation about it on site also please?

It has been said that some SPECS setups take the first reading of a vehicle before the vehicle enters a reduced speed zone, even though the camera itself is within the zone, thereby enabling a false (elevated) speed reading.

There are also examples of a camera van being parked outside the limit it is enforcing, such as this one on the A541 in North Wales which is aiming to catch drivers in a 30 zone as they speed up approaching the NSL signs:

God I'd love to go past that NSL sign at 29.9recurring mph in second then absolutely give it one past the tax van.

I know that's immature, but there we go.

Hardly seems fair that the ordinary motorist is expected to adhere to the law, yet the enforcers can get away with all sorts.

Much better were the days when a Mr Plod might stop you and would often let you off with a caution. (A sweet smile could work wonders then ;))

Don't be dragged down to their level, adhere to the law and next time you toddle past their van you can be safe in your knowledge that you are better than them.

[in case you didn't know, I'm one of the pet Camera Supporters on here! The above WAS tongue in cheek, well, mostly tongue in cheek. I say mostly tongue in cheek, I mean a bit tongue in cheek].

Even being pro-camera, it's not acceptable to break the law to prosecute the law, in my very humble opinion.

No, it's not quite like that. It's when companies/organisations etc try to use the bully tactics/intimidation implying that ordinary folks are stupid and they try to convince them that their way is correct/legal even when it isn't. Having studied law myself, I believe they should adhere to the law as much as anyone else, and if I can find something to disprove what they say, I usually leave them gobsmacked with the realisation that they don't know as much as they thought. Being a mere female, that gives me great satisfaction ;)

At least that Talivan was visible. The one that got me in Anglesey last summer wasn't. But then doing 35 in a 30 area, I was probably going so fast that I wouldn't have had time to see it would I?

Or to prosecute law over safety...

You don't have to exceed the speed limit to make a lot of noise accelerating past that camera van. I'm sure changing down a few gears and planting it would be sufficient.

I wonder what a Boxer engine at high RPM sounds like from within one of those metal boxes. Apparently mine is more annoying if you are inside a house than if you are outside the house, and I'm sure there is more echo in the metal vans.

Maybe I should get that perfectly legal de-cat for my car (no emissions figures for it, so it has to pass a non-cat MOT) just to make certain. :)

My point is: You can stick to the letter of the law and still be an unhelpful, and annoying twat.

Hmmm, I have the opposite problem. A very quick (for a Renault..) car that's also rather quiet.
