re the M25:
aren't the lower limit signs always on (well they have been every time I've been on the m25 in the past 6 months) as that's what activates the cameras?

not all the time. After J14 today they were off, sometimes they are all off in the afternoon ... later evening as well, they tend to be off.

Nope, during quieter times the signs are usually blank - if there's been an earlier reduced limit then there'll be one gantry at the end of the limit showing the NSL symbol, after that you won't then see anything on the signs unless there's another sub-NSL limit in force further down the road. Oh yes, and the cameras most certainly CAN be triggered without anything showing on the associated sign... fortunately the one that double-flashed my wife doing an indicated 85 along a nice empty stretch of L4 with nothing on the gantries must have been empty :bighand:

well obviously the 40limit doesnt count until you pass the actual 40 signs :?

I think you missed the point, which is that some SPECs installations are (or used to) partially enforce a lower limit to vehicles still outside of the lower limit zone.

Here's a good example: an old pic (May 05) of Lower Thames St (courtesy of ABD):

yes, got that thanks.

i just find it amazing anyone could be caught out by this 40limit (however enforced), and was horrified by the thought of someone braking down to 25mph in traffic that flows normally at around 45  let alone doing 25 for a sustained period to bring the average down.

You are not alone mate.

If they really cared about safety, they wouldn't enforce such stupid limits.
