Apparently, a local councillor and up to 500 local residents ase planning to petition Staffordshire County Council to have the speed limit reduced to 50mph along the entire 13 mile stretch of the A518 between Haughton and Newport.

Lib Dem Councillor Barry Stamp has stated that, "Over the past few years the number of accidents on the A518 between Haughton and Newport has steadily increased. While many result on only minor injuries there have also been a number of fatalities".

IMHO, the 518 is perfectly capable of sustaining the NSL currently in force.

Knee-jerk reaction to Monday's announcement of speed limit reveiews???

Any thoughts before I draft a response to the Staffordshire Newsletter??

Include a strong note of caution about basing a change on a random blip and invoking RTTM to zero genuine benefit.

How many lorries use that road? How many of those are sticking to 40 and the fatalities are caused by stupid overtakes?

The A518 is perfectly capable of sustaining 60 mph. There are long stretches where it is safer to go much faster. Are the danger points anything to do with the dangerous crossing around Weston where the A51 & A518 cross? Have they turned it into a roundabout yet? I haven't been on the road for a while so I don't know whether they have done that already. If not, they flipping ought to! Ditto the junction at the Swan with the Two necks where the A51 and the road to Market Drayton meet. It is a blind corner, heavily sloped junction and weird junction all together. Definitely not the easiest places to negotiate at all and is a prime example of a black spot that should be engineered out properly rather than having some numpty speed limit slapped on it.

Might be worth a letter in the Sentinel as well as the Staffordshire Newsletter. If they think the A518 is too fast at 60 then the locals that chose to live on a main A road need their heads testing.
