Posted this on the PH site yesterday as well.
Brian Lashley in "Manchester Evening News" (Friday - 15/10/04) reports:
Speed cameras are to be introduced at 31 "blackspots" across Manchester. They are part of a campaign to cut road deaths in the city.
The Manchester Pratnership and GMP are introducing red light and mobile speed traps at areas of "community concern"
The campaign was launched at the junction of Kingsway and Fog Lane, Burnage where allegedly there have been 7 collisions and one death over past three years.
GMP's road safety officer Insp Brian Wood said: "The whole idea of the speed limit is for people's safety"
Councillor Richard Cowell (planning) said: "These sites are not selected at random. They have been identified as sites where there have been unacceptable numbers of collisions"
Burnage Councillor Joh cameron said: "The cameras are not there to make money. They are there to protect the public at large from drivers!"
Amanda Weaver of Withington whose son Michael was killed by a hit and run driver backs the campaign.
"Losing my son was devastating. Sticking to the speed limit means the difference between life and death. Drivers need to slow down and these cameras will make a difference"

Whilst I - and no doubt all contributors to this forum - have every sympathy for this poor lady - who speaks in mix of anger and grief - and doubtlessly brainwashed by supposedly well meaning Victim Support groups.....
Michael Weaver featured in the BBC "Real Story" regarding hit and runs. He was murdered by a thug in a throwaway car. The sort who could not care less about choosing a safe speed, safe and considerate driving and would not give a toss about a speed camera because it could bring him to justice in his untaxed car and unregistered car anyway.
Even a BiB may have had his /her work cut out bringing this person to justice as well if spotted on patrol.
A speed camera would not have saved this boy.
Increased traffic police and proper deterrents for this kind of crime would appear to be of more use.
But heck -the mentality appears to be:
"speed camera - that'll fix it!"
AND IT WILL NOT!
