Ideas for possible future mass protests against speed cameras. |

| Side mounted number plates
On a specific day, drivers wishing to participate remove their vehicle number plates and remount them facing the sides of the car. You might be able to display them low in the rear side windows for example. Obviously it is an offence to not display number plates in the designated front and rear positions. However if enough drivers were to move their number plates the police and the courts could not cope with the workload and there would be no prosecutions. Speed cameras could not photograph side mounted number plates. |
| Mega ban
Everyone that drives as part of their job e.g. sales people, lorry drivers etc (the people that keep the economy going), should go out on a specified day and get caught by enough bogus speed cameras that we all get banned. They obviously can't ban us all because the country would go broke. A particular concern with this idea was raised by Martin Smith. There is a risk that participants might use excessive speed past speed cameras wisely sited at accident black spots. This could be a real cause of danger. For this reason we don't think this idea is a good one. (idea from
a newsgroup post. I'm sorry, but I have lost the original poster's name)

| Modified number plates
On a specific day drivers wishing to participate alter their number plates, for example with black sticky tape. They might change a "3" to an "8" or anything that passes casual inspection. Photographs of such number plates will not lead to convictions. An interesting variation on the idea is to alter someone else's number plate. In fact the more widespread this becomes the harder it would be for anyone to be prosecuted. |
| Throw away the number plates
On a specific day, drivers wishing to participate remove their vehicle number plates and discard them. Obviously it is an offence to not display number plates. However if enough drivers were to move their number plates the police and the courts could not cope with the workload and there would be no prosecutions. This would be especially effective if drivers who were stopped by police refused to give their names as well. With no easy identification of car or driver, the police could do little. They might try to arrest a million or more motorists, and it would be funny to see them try. |
| Slow down protest
Starting on a specific day protesting drivers
use the motorway network at 40 mph. The increase in journey times and publicity
would be good for the cause. Possibly specific motorways could be targetted
on specific days.

Richard Aston in a newsgroup post).

| Deny the offence
Participating owners or drivers who received
a speed camera fixed penalty notice deny that their car was in the area
at the time of the offence. With very large numbers of people denying the
offences (presumably the assumption would be that their number plates had
been cloned) we would not expect the CPS or the courts to be able to cope
with the workload.
