I have never said it was wrong.
It just seems like a very peculiar thing for anyone to feel uncomfortable about. Would you still feel uncomfortable if it happened today or was it a product of youth over experience?
Ach! Mrs M. I think it was because of the jumper .. not the wisest thing to wear if breastfeeding or needing to feed kitten in public. My children - especially the older ones - all seen me breastfeeding at home. Und as said - I kept it discreet und wore clothes which made task easier for me to do so as well.. Just undo the top couple of buttons und job done discreetly with no nonsense.
Have son now aged 19 years. He ist medical student - so ist no prude ..

und our second son does like a certain page in a certain newspaper

Ist "Bild"

und others like it. He always turns to
that first!

He ist 17 years und has a twin sister. So no prude either. But I think both our boys would be just a little "wus-like und a bit taken aback" if woman ripped off her jumper on a train und fed the baby. ( I hope she had a frilly lace trimmed silky camisole und matching bra though. ) Ist case really not of feeding the baby - but being aware that a young lad may just feel a bit "gauche or awkward" when confronted with the reality of what breasts are really for und seeing something which a young laddish mind - just maturing out of boyhood in reality - has been used to looking at in certain newspapers und magazines - usually enhanced with a booby job und associated with that "cor - blimey ... look at them tits! Gerr-em-out - Kiss me quick!" culture of something naughty but nice!
After all ree.t ...

She had to lift her jumper.
Also as an 18/19 year old (7 years ago), it is a bit of a shock, I she had asked, I more than likely said"okay fine" and looked out of the window or something.

What would you tell your students to do if they were sitting on a train and a woman sitting opposite started breastfeeding?
It would be an interesting debate in the class in which birds und bees are discussed.
I shall ask our 17 year old son what he would do in such a scenario.
It would certainly be a good topic as breasts are not just something which we use to enhance our femininity

but functional in child rearing.

I have to say that the baby's need to be fed overrides your desire not to see it, and I certainly don't think she should need to ask for your permission first. Up here it's against
the law to prevent, or attempt to prevent, a woman from breastfeeding in public. Why do we even need a law like that? Because of views like yours, I suspect.
I think there was one case in England.. Kent last year whereby the woman was breastfeeding on a bench on a main road. The policeman gave her a caution for it.

Was an outcry ..
But again - I think we are back to "discretion" und no need to ask permission to breastfeed - but I think for both Mama und everyone else - we do so in ladylike fashion - to keep discretion und retain that mystique of our "icon of all things sassy"

IMO, breastfeeding in public isn't like smoking, listening to music or any of the other examples in this thread. You can choose to not look at the mother, but you can't turn your ears off or stop breathing until the smoker goes away.
True - ist a case though of being thoughtful of how someone else perceives something. Ist a bit like the current media debate over the post 9/11 fashion to wear a full facial veil. Oddly enough - I read an article in the paper by a Muslim woman who will wear a veil to "protect her modesty" - yet will argue her right to breast feed in public - declaring this to be the norm back in her own country" There were some rather disturbing reasons given by some of these women as to why they decide to wear this garment - und ist more political than religious assuming the paper quoted them accurately. But this ist another issue und should be a separate thread as ist likely to get as heated as the one up in the SPL forum!

Edit: it's somewhat ironic that we're arguing about this in a thread about 'bare necessities'. What bare necessities does the infant have, other than food, clothing and shelter? You seem to want the first of those to be subservient to your prudish sensibilities.
Ja - but we do have "Cow und Gate/Gerber etc" too!

Not all Mamas breastfeed und we even have some who are not taught this skill properly either. It ist a skill .. und some of us produce more milk than others und some just cannot produce enough to feed und so have to use the "Cow und Gate etc" as supplemental too. But as said .. I think ist easier on all if Mama wear something which enable her to feed the baby easily und without fuss or need to strip off a jumper, feel a woman und perhaps too - a sassy lady, und spare her own blushes as well as the 18 year old boy sat opposite her on a train.
