Not wanting to rant, but;
1. With no vans how do people expect tradesmen to go about their business.
2. With no lorries, the supermarket shelves would be empty
3. I drive a LR defender 110, a good portion of my milage is supporting charity / motorsport events. I would like to see someone in a Mondeo taking injured people off tracks up the West Highland Way etc. If we're not off road, we still have the capability to carry a medic + lots of gear.

Hi Ben!
Long time ago we had a debate on here on this same issue. One of the cyclists .. chap whose posts are normally sensible and one of the few of the cycling brigade who agrees to disagree in a very courteous manner .. and who occassionally visits here. I actually like his posts when he comes along.. and my mind's eye imagines a vision of a really decent bloke.
In one "set to" where we gently nudged the beer

.. I pointed out the very same.. He was arguing for the rail freight system to deliver our goodies. I reminded him that a big lorry then loaded these goods and delivered around to the stores whilst the "internet shoppo" van did numerous detours via its "sat nav" .. and usually got lost somewhere..
I note with some good humour that Vine "ourtraged" have nominated motorbikes, tractors, white vans, 4x4s, BICYCLES

(do they value their lives ..

) . horses, caravans, HGVs.
So far on "listenagain" .. we heard Christine Hamilton rail unconvincingly against the motorbikes.
Wildy and the Swiss ride them.. I have never been that way inclined.
But whilst I dislike some bikers who clearly "take the proverbial".. I find the majority ride as I would expect.. courteously and safely. Leathers protect them. And I agree that they are very vulnerable. I asked my Wildy

why she risked her beloved Papa's anger and bought a motorbike .. (it was the fastest one in Europe when she was a student

)
Her reply to me.. was

I also wanted to get to lectures in record time.. This was fastest way to do so. .. It was fun too. I learned as well to see thing from biker's perception. It helped improve my driving and my cycling to feel this and understand this.
But I also cannot explain. the feel and smell of leather, fuel, the sheer power and the very immediate response of these machines. It gives a real thrill!
IG even said similar to his cousin.

It has still never enticed me. I perhaps like bicycles and cars

The argument against the 4x4?
I actually agree with the C+ paranoid who suffer in the towns. These vehicles are just superb in a rural setting .. but are clumsy in an urban setting even if driven by some one as exemplary qualified as Krissi .. my sister -in - law .. who does say

These vehicles are Kings of the Road in rural communitiies.. but I agree that they are most unsuited to "fashion accessory in Chelsea driven by a a muppet"
I do not have issues with lorries.. or horses.. or even tractors way of life here

I think perhaps I am concerned that cyclists feature in this list as nominated by R2 listeners. I find it even more worrying given the increased listenership too. I confess I do tune in to R2 more than any other station other than Classic and Jazz FM .. on the basis that they provide a fairly relaxed general entertainment overall. Thus I find the inclusion of the cyclist a bit alarming.
I will say the spiels to date are rants worthy of the taboids .. might reflect the overall perception.. but the way presented strikes me as very lightweight and of the rather tasteless entertainment mode.. which sadly makes "compulsive listening" and "entertainment". I admit to almost choking over my lunch today anyway.
Tis a throwaway debate really .. but "funny whilst it lasts" in entertainment terms.
Yes .. I think it undermines serious road safety values.. and whilst I concede "bit of fun and I admit to laughing as well when listening to all this.. " I will have to say that this is very lightweigh entertainment and should not be taken as a "personal attack" to anyone using the nominated "hates"
The real HATE is the Speed Cam and its chums - after all
No one actually "hates" a fellow road user. But most hate the scamerati and if the nominated list was a true reflection of feelings.. then the cam van would be well into the lead
