Just today I used the M62 from the Rocket junction heading eastbound towards M/cr and if you come from Liverpool (as I was) you hit a 40mph + a speed camera sign just before the start of the M62 this is only a short stretch from Queens Rd T/lights approx. 1/2 mile long then you get the m/way signs.

Fair enough you say but there are no signs INDICATING an NSP (at the start of the m/way) so the question is quite simply as there are no NSP signs "What is the limit for the m/way 40 or 70mph?"

I would assume it is 70mph but as there are no cameras on this stretch towards M/cr why put up a sign, is it for the 40 limit as there are no cameras on this stretch, only on the L/Pool bound side or are the signs for mobile cameras?

In England and Wales, the "start of motorway" sign always indicates NSL unless signed otherwise.

Scotland tends to have "70" signs on joining a motorway.

What is an NSP? (NSL?)

M62 is 70mph but on the end bit, coming into Liverpool (Rocket) drops to 50mph and has a Gatso that seems to be popular at the moment.

The "Queens Rd" (Queens Drive) is 40mph and merges with Edge Lane 30mph at the Rocket.

Once you see the motorway signs, its 70mph.

What annoys me are the first roadworks on the M62 on the way to Manchester - a sudden 50mph terminal sign with no countdown warning whatsoever.

The only way to escape a scammer hiding behind the terminal sign is to emergency brake. WTF are these nutters playing at?

I do not speed at all, I expect a motorway to be 70mph while driving my mum to Manchester airport on a near empty motorway. To suddenly hit a temporary 50 limit with no advance warning is dangerous. Only because I will never ever ever break the law and will emergency brake on a deserted motorway in order to comply with the rules.

It did put the shits up me though, more so for the HGV behind me (Talk about a near fatal!) LOL! You gotta larf!

Such actions could be avoided if you "lifted" your vision, improved your observation, and used some deceleration sense.

HTH.

I presume you are talking about the extensive roadworks at J6? (Knowsley/M57)

Eastbound, that 50mph sign is visible from several hundreds of yards away! Start looking further on than the bonnet!

I must say Sputnik, if you never break the law, you shouldn't be doing more than 70 when you see the 50 sign and if you can't slow down from 70 to 50 in the distance you can see the sign, I think an eye test might be in order!

LOL! Except perhaps, the useless roadworks (at the ONE time in the past I approached them) had a temporary flimsy 50 sign, about waist height, and no indication of roadworks prior or long after it. Visibility blocked by juggernaughts in the left lane.

Of course, *ALL* the regular traffic just went through at 70mph+, because just like all the do-gooders they had bionic eyesight, and more than this, prior knowledge of where the actual speed cameras, and even the damn roadworks, etc are!

This was the first time in over a year that I have done the M62 airport run. It was obvious from all the annoyed motorists that I should not have slowed down to 50mph at the terminal sign, but done so MUCH further on at the ACTUAL ROADWORKS.

I'm sorry but all fixed motorway signs (including the dreaded 50mph at the other end of the M62) have terminal marks to let you decelerate nicely.

If a sudden abrupt 70-50mph braking is in order - and this is 500 yards away from any visible roadworks - is this safe? Would not a "roadworks ahead" sign suffice? plus the usual terminal markdowns, rather than an abrupt unlit 50mph terminal sign at waist height? Not seen cos of juggernaughts?

I had no problem braking from 70 to 50 in the short distance of seeing a waist high temporary 50mph sign. It was an abrupt move and clearly annoyed every other motorway user around me, (they all went with the flow). However, the lorry behind really screeched the brakes and I guess could have been a near whiplash accident, or even a death if I wasn't so advanced a driver.

Thankfully I managed to complete my COAST manouevre and survived. I didn't exceed 50mph past the terminal sign.

I agree I do need better eyesight - I am thinking of those Gen. 3 head mounted nightvision goggles? better than HIDs surely

Well it's your call mate! You are, of course, perfectly within your rights to slam on as hard as you like once you DO finally see the sign and it is, of course, legally the fault of the bloke behind if he hits you.

Personally, I'm not sure I could live with myself knowing that I'd complied with the letter of the law but had been a contributory factor towards someone's death or serious injury!
