Learn here how to avoid an accident - aimed at young drivers.
Quote:
Drivers under the age of 20 were involved in:

* 21 fatal collisions in which 26 young people died, 13 were seriously injured and 12 escaped with slight injuries

* 195 serious injury accidents in which there were 242 serious injuries and 100 slight injuries

* In fatal collisions, 8 out of 10 casualties were male

* In serious collisions, 7 out of 10 casualties were male

Major factors identified in collisions were

* Loss of control

* Wrong course positioning

* Bends

* Negligent overtaking

Then it goes on to say:
Quote:
Excessive or inappropriate speed is considered a major factor in the collision causes here.

Inexperience causes young drivers to overestimate their ability to control their vehicles at high speed.

When finding themselves in trouble they lack the skill to recover.

So, lacking skills, you will learn them how?
SLOWING DOWN to a speed where you wont need them? Apart from urging back seat passengers to belt up, and beware of prescription drugs, there is NO educational advice on this page!

Safer Roads for Cumbria will offer you a £60 voucher towards a Pass+ course, if you have recently passed your test. Maybe the CSCP could at least mention this, and give these young drivers some chance of an education!

What about the idea of a 'Mentor Driver', someone that might give up 10 hours to help young drivers gain extra knowledge for free from those more experienced ?

In business - after College I was offered a mentor (who sadly was useless - never replied even to start as it goes ...) but I think this might work. It is a bit like the Police education that they do for bikes - forget the name for the minute ... but how about a start in Cumbria ?
Say get 5 people who might offer their help and ask the local cops for names of drivers that have had 'silly' incidents and offer the help.
Get testimonials to help develop this scheme ? Plus others they know to 'have a go' ? I bet the local cops would be keen too .... :-)

Perhaps it could be an incentive to join Safe Speed - a membership advantage for the young driver (say young driver option of £20/yr?) ? :lol:

I think that's a cracking idea. I just can't see the Cumbrian outfit having the courage to try it.

I'm sure there must be a few good drivers about that would *love* to give their 'pearls of wisdom' to younger enthusiastic drivers :-)
I bet a few can find an hour a week ???
What about a few police lurkers or those who state a few things pointing out a few drivers that might be good one's who have strayed a little ... and might benefit from a bit extra help.

If someone can find me one in the Ross-shire Area, I'll do an hour a week.
I think if we could try some younger people who are struggling to understand a few things - perhaps we can help ? It just needs a start and then a small flow, to start to pick up acknowledgement, and for people to recognise the valuable assistance ... and it would go a long way to helping to prove that Safe Speed is about Road Safety. ;-)
I know that IAM do things a bit like this, but I think that a more gentle and friendly approach to guide and NOT to 'teach' is required.
