All the fuss about a system which from a commercial point of view, SPECs should have been like from the start.

Anyway one thing has raised my concern. As an a-level student of all 3 divisions of science, I would like to ask what right they have to record time stamps to 1/1000 of a second, when the car could enter at a variety of directions, vertical angles, the number plate is not a fixed point, and the system algorithm will certainly take longer to detect a number plate depending on this factors, plus no doubt other factors like light, visibility camera position, etc.

At a quick estimate I reckon the distance measurement could be out by 10m each end, ie 20m maximum, and the time out by 1.5 seconds each end ie 3 seconds maximum. Over 1km, I reckon 6% error. hence 30mph recorded speed could be between 28 and 32mph.

Look how accurate they think their system is: Whoever designed the system would lose marks in a GCSE exam, and probably wouldn't last a week at a decent university.

Finally how did the contractors measure the distance as exactly 1.7779 km? The road would have to be dead straight.

Oh and the cameras are conveniently monitored on a motorised base. For every additonal degree of tilt, the average speed is recorded just that little bit higher. £££ I wish I worked for a Scameraship  £££.

You notice the comment, reproduced below, in which the .gov throws its hands in the air "not us peeps, those nasty SCP's are to blame"

Quote:
The Department of Transport said that the introduction of the speedtraps would be at the discretion of Safety Camera Partnerships across the country.

How long is it going to be before someone finds-out that the .gov are giving them loads of [our] cash to install them ?

Operated by RedSpeed I see, the gangsters with all the chat, but no expertise or procedures to back up their accusations.

The people who go on about "If you break the speed limit which is the law, infact they say it like LAW, then you have no one to blame but yourself" they don't take into account that some places should have no speed limit like the motorway for example, and in other places the limits are too low. They also seem to like the idea of being government lapdog and being watched to have the "privilage" of driving a car. These people also seem to have no concept of freedom within reasonable boundaries, something that has increasingly been taken away from drivers under a false pretences. If I am a responsible driver in the knowledge that the government has instilled trust in me and doesn't have monitoring devices all the time I feel proud of being a safe and responsible driver. However being the same driver with monitoring devices all over the place I feel complete and utter contempt for my over lords, and feel very stressed.

You are right nicycle - but the manufacturers like Meggit who make Vascar specify their own instrument to be +/- 2% accurate ( without any proper limitations on what is a time device ) yet the police who use them and the charlatans in CPS trot out speed offence figures to 3 places of decimals to convey a bogus sense of certainty to the instrument.

And needless to say the vast majority of magistrates have no technical competnce whatsoever and swallow this nonsense hook line and sinker

What concerns me more is that the instruments come up with figures with that many decimal places. If i use a precision balance for example, and it claims 32.34g for more than a few seconds, I except it to be between 32.335 and 32.345g.

And you wouldn't tell someone to meet you a around 14 minutes past 4 and 32 seconds would you? You'd say quarter past 4. Why don't the workers at RedSpeed and magistrates have this same level of common sense?

Edit: fixed values, thanks toltec

I think I just had an epiphany moment. Technology is advancing quicker than common sense.

Agreed. It may be some way off, but in due course there could be a real backlash against this. Hopefully the government will come to its senses before that happens, but there's no sign of it yet.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Assuming you meant 32.335 & 32.345

That is just the display resolution not the accuracy (you probably know that though), it is also quite possible that reading of 32.34 is displayed for values between 32.34 and 32.3499 etc. So unless the manufacturer actually states how the value is displayed all that instrument is really telling you is the measurement lies between 32.33 and 32.35 .

Note 'measurement' <> 'weight'

I think that perhaps the "day out" in the car to the seaside for the family may be over... It's cheaper and safer to take a cheapy flight to Bratislava for the weekend and spend your hard earned there instead....Rather than to be branded a "criminal" here!

P.S. Guys........ Love the NEW look! :)
