Came across this little nugget on the BBC the other day.

 He did the equivalent of "230 mph in a 30 mph zone" according to the headlines

Speeding jet bike rider is fined

Marine authorities have branded a water jet bike rider who was fined for speeding as "extremely dangerous".

Adam LA, of Southampton, was caught doing 46 knots in a six-knot zone on Southampton Water in April.

He was cautioned by marine police and allowed to proceed, but he then broke the limit again and was apprehended.

:scratchchhin: Bit silly if already told to ease off.

Quote:
Magistrates fined him £700 and ordered him to pay a further £1,714 costs when he appeared in court last week.

Adam La was caught on 22 April when Cunard's "Three Queens" - Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2 - lined up in a historic meeting in Southampton.

Speeding on the water is as unacceptable as it is on land

Sgt Andy Simpson, Hampshire Police

Police clocked him at 46 knots in a six-knot zone and claimed it was the equivalent of a motorist doing 230mph in a 30mph limit.

Harbour Master, Captain Philip Holliday, said: "In this instance, Mr La was not only travelling at excess speed - on a day when the water was very busy and extra care would have been preferable in any case - but he had the audacity to ignore his initial warning from the police and to then actually increase his speed.

"I believe the penalty given to him is therefore appropriate.

"Any mariner who does not comply with the law is posing an unacceptable risk to all users of the port."

Sgt Andy Simpson, of Hampshire Police Marine Support Unit, said: "Speeding on the water is as unacceptable as it is on land.

"In this particular case, it was potentially extremely dangerous."

In addition to the fine and costs La was ordered to pay a £15 contribution to the Victims' Support Fund when he appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court on 17 September.

That is either bad reporting, bad grammar or utter tosh!

Whilst the ratio of posted limit to speed is the same, it should be reported as such. The statement as it is presented above is incorrect! :)

If the jet ski and rider is 350Kgs and the car and driver is 1300Kgs then as an increase in absolute kinetic energy it is equivalent to the car doing just over 40.5mph in a 30mph zone.

This is also meaningless as a measure of of safety or lack thereof.

For extra nerd value the jet ski at 46 knots has the same kinetic energy as a 1090kg road vehicle at 30 mph.

Or the increase in energy is the same as a 350Kg bike and rider doing just over 60 mph in a 30mph zone.

Its also equivalent to a driver doing 537mph on the motorway, which incidentally is Mach 0.7, around the speed of an airliner in cruise.

Nonsense.

Some of you seem to have WAY TOO much time on your hands!!

Join your local council... "only two meetings a month...".

Yeah... and committee meetings, neighbourhood forum meetings, county in bloom meetings... and not one of them held in a pub!

I did attend a Highways meeting this week though! :) Next time I will enlighten them with your data! :D

Leastways councilors get some financial compensation -now try it from the residents association position - sitting as piggy in middle ,trying to explain to residents why you're councillor can't do this .

The police who did the arresting seemed to act with a fair degree of professional discretion- warn him, and when he decided to be a jerk, throw the full force of the law at him. He's only got himself to blame. Judging by the size of the fine I'd wager he's some spoilt rich kid who needed a telling off, hopefully daddy will take away his jetski.

The plod who made the 230mph comment though- (I don't know if the officers were the same ones) - oh dear. thats ridiculous and out of all proportion, and this kind of hysterical statement really does the police service no favours.

The police spokesman missed out the fact the the jetski had no brakes, ineffective steering and no indicators.

By the way, Southampton Water is VERY BIG. Just how dangerous was this (apart from simply being over the limit)?

What use are indicators if the steering is so bad?

It's just hyped-up on so many levels. Last time I sailed those waters, I didn't notice too many pedestrians or cyclists (as one might in a 30 limit when driving one's car). I think the biggest danger comes from the disruption it could cause to big ships and the potential danger if a big ship has to take evasive action. Ever since the Pride of Bilbao watch officer prosecution for mowing down a small yacht I think there has been an increase in nervousness of bridge staff on big ships. It's obviously pretty hard to spot a jet skier close to the ship from the bridge and it's also pretty impossible to safely stop a big ship in a confined channel too. I'd be quite happy to just let the "Darwin" principle root out the jet skiers who really shouldn't be using up everyone else's oxygen anyway, but in today's caring society, we need to protect these idiots from themselves (apparently)!

I agree that he got what was coming to him after fair warning but I don't agree with the hyped-up comparisons with motoring.
