As posted on the SUV thread - first part of the programme looked at SUVs and legislation which would be equally protective to pedestrians and cyclists should there be a collison. This has been in under wraps since 1985 - and also focussed briefly on ESP. It did not mention that some vehicles already have this - and some also combined with ASR - and seemed to attack the car industry for dragging their feet. Will agree that the safety devices are currently overpriced - especially when ESP could cost as little as £100 to fit as standard.
The final bit focused on the speed limiter. I can see problems with this - lot of rear end shunts could occur, particularly if the car behind is not equipped with this device. It also takes away the level of skill - what happens if there is a satellite failure? If you lose satellite contact under a long bridge or if in a tunnel?
I think it needs a lot more thought. Besides as others have already said - all road users have a shared responsibility and we all need constant re-education, re-energising, and reinforcement as pedestrians and occasionalu cyclists.
