ah but you said "
Why should a twisty windy road be any more dangerous than a wide open motorway if you're being careful?"

So why shouldn't a twisty road have a MAXIMUM speed the same as a motorway of 70MPH?

Ahh at last, you are coming round to my way of thinking....good...so you agree that rural roads can have a 70MPH speed limit so long as people drive carefully on them...yes?

What, at 50mph? Why have a limit greater than 50 then?

Why do you always bring it back to speed? Your the one who is apparently following speeding drivers, and thus speeding yourself!

Yes but we are talking about a LIMIT of 70MPH (as they were when I (and probably you) learnt to drive)...it doesn't mean that you have to travel at 70MPH BUT as Weepy says if you are careful there is no reason why they shouldn't have a LIMIT of 70MPH, all country roads have wide open stretches that are safe at 70MPH in the right conditions at the right time of day.

And here's me being accused of no living in the real world.

What percentage of drivers do you think are careful?

An interesting thought I've just had, since weepy believes that speed is the cause of all accidents, if I were, for example to take my car to lane 6 of the M25 and park it there, it must be ultra safe. After all, it isn't moving therefore that is the safest speed of all!

100% mind you, you seem to think that people go out with the intention of crashing, so just talk to me about the real world again?

I believe that you have actually "cherry picked" your own phrase there, did you not????

Cut me canine teeth on rurals as lad. Learned how to handle "serious roads with a drop"from the Swiss "seniors to me" and my own Dad (plod trainer in his "saladn days") But you still have to COAST and if you COAST properly . you match safest speed/gear/position/gear etc to the conditions. and even lolly  Normally you are not drfiting too far above lolly . even on these roads. At night .. these are trickier than empty motorways all the same  I would be dishonest to all if I suggest otherwise  Our teams apply professional opinions . but to a fairly uniform and set standard of good practice. They apply this fairly to all .., but not one person gets away with "stupid" here  All get fair discretion . cough . all the same  to an agreed code of good practice which we know to be fair .. and which applied under Garvin's teams as does under Stoddart's teams

Buit we know lack of COAST .. driver error are the main causes ... inept appreciation of speed may be a factor .., but not necessarily the prime cause . but still linked to outcome all the same. We need to examine behaviour.. address training . instil good and well mannered habits/practice . That way.. we control the speed element a lot better perhaps.

I think we have to explore and drive down each avenue .. deal with each cul-de-sac .. to fully address real road safety policies for the future. Fora like this one allow us to examine such and we should do this politely .. OK ., tease and joke good naturedly oer the odd differences .. but still chat without acrimony all the same.

Neither would I, I'd only ever go by my speedo, but it's interesting to compare the two.

No, many many more: many (if not most) people travel at 35 mph in 30 zones (and 45 in 40 zones), see the header of this thread.

so most people are criminals? On a given day, how many times is the speed limit broken? More times than we could count, hundreds of millions of times would be my guess. About 9 people a day are killed on the roads, even if all of the roads deaths were caused by breaking the speed limit, that's not a bad rate of return and not a high risk.

SPEEDING 'ROUTINE FOR MAJORITY OF DRIVERS'
By Peter Woodman, Press Association Transport Correspondent
More than four in five motorists break speed limits, a survey today showed.
As many as 82% of drivers admitted to sometimes or frequently exceeding the
limit, the poll by YouGov and insurance company Admiral found.

This just proves that the majority of speed limits are set too low does it not?

It would appear so.

Many many many more seriously injured or slightly injured each day.

The target should be zero deaths and zero injuries, sure even I concede that's not possible, but at the moment the numbers are simply too high.

You kep posting this as if it is a triumph, both you and I would have to admit to speeding on occasion, because everyone on the road speeds. That is a fact, the only thing this proves is that speed is not the problem.

Why should dual carriage ways only be 40 or 50MPH limits?

Now you're not making sense, do you speed or not?

for instance, I don't travel around at 35 in a 30 like many obviously do.

The Government set Guidelines which state that a speed limit should not be set below the mean speed of that road, yet if 80% of drivers are exceeding that limit then the mean speed is higher than the speed limits...so the authorities aren't following govt guidelines ....why not?

Is it hundreds of millions? no. Is it 100's of thouands? no!

The KSI stat, even though the SI is purely based upon the opinion of the officer involved in the report, is still very low compared to the number of people speeding every day.

Further to my earlier post, I'm splitting this thread.

For the moment this thread will be locked such that new posts don't fall into the wrong place as I split.

Some off topic posts have been split into a new thread: Judging the speed of others.
Others have been split off into Hazards and Visibility

Edit: unlocked.
