I was being quite specific to this particular theft from a church. I cannot imagine that there are that many goods that he would want and I think that you are not allowing for the trust that is being placed on him to do a job well and to obtain (perhaps for the first time) respect ? It IS only an idea and would need a lot of planning and trial to see if it even stood a chance.
I just see that prisons are in dire need of reform and often fail to work ... but I fully recognise that punishment is required, necessary and needs to 'fit the crime'. If we need to start to look to alternative and possibly workable ideas then this might be a possibility?
If we only ever regard 'them' as scumbags (to say the least), how are they ever going to have any chance to improve and understand why society detests them and how they might get out of the rut, that we see that they are in ? Some might be 'untouchable' I appreciate this. I am no soft target when it comes to punishment but it need to be fair and it must at least try to work, so that it overall improves society - no ?
