As I have not been here long I have not heard this point being discussed. This would be an almost unbelievable situation on any motoring forum, so I am sure that it has been the subject of discussion before here.

As I really cannot be bothered searching through archives to see if it HAS been discussed before I will just present it and wait for the responses !

I saw this published in my favourite tabloid today and I thought that it might be a good road-safety subject to discuss here.

Anyway....here goes:

LADIES RULE THE ROADS May 12 2004

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk

WOMEN are safer and more law-abiding drivers than men.

Figures from the Home Office showed that of all motorists who were found guilty of an offence in an English or Welsh court, in 2002, 88 per cent were men.

They also committed almost all the most serious offences, such as causing death and dangerous driving.

Men were responsible for 96 per cent of car thefts and 97 per cent of motorcycle offences.

________________________________________________

As I don't like throwing facts and figures and statistics about I will only say that I gleaned this from the Scottish Daily Record....I have NOT actually been to the Home Office site to confirm this statement ! I trust my regular tabloid on this occasion.

________________________________________________

After reading this I wondered how this could be the case.

Is it because women don't have the problem of Testosterone flowing in their veins that men do ?

Are the often-reported facts that although women have roughly the same numbers of accidents as men and these prangs are a lot cheaper to fix as far as insurance payouts are concerned that these accidents seem to happen mainly in car-parks and while travelling at very slow speeds, ( usually coming out and going into the home lockup, it has been alleged ! ).

Maybe the once-per-month flow of progesterone is the female equivalent of the aggression that man have as male animals...I don't know ?

Maybe YOU do ?

P,

men certainly do take more risks and have more accidents but with regards to women I think their standard of driving is sometimes appaling and is worse than what i've seen any male driver do. Things i've encountered women drivers doing are:

(1) Severe hesitation

(2) Indicating right at a roundabout when going straight through

(3) Absolutely unbelievable parking efforts (certainly not justified in the time it took)

To be fair i'll list some men traits as well:

(1) tailgating

(2) Cutting up

(3) Racing

But there is ONE thing that boils my blood and that both men and women are guilty of and that is UNNECESSARY BRAKING; mainly due to following the car in front too close (not necessarily tailgating)..anybody agree?

Andrew

Yeh Andy.....

I have seen SOME women doing SOME of these things too but I find it difficult to stereotype all women like that !

( Remember Sheila Van-Dam ? Or am I speaking before your time ? ).

She was one of the greatest drivers that has EVER been behind a wheel !

I am sure that even the most rabid and testosterone-filled advanced driver here would be able to think of more; if they really tried to think that is.

As our illustrious leader would almost certainly say......."The statistics speak for themselves", while forgetting that statistics are WIDE OPEN for different interpretations !

I would LOVE to hear the opinion of a woman here.

I'm sure it's the case that men are much more likely than women to commit the kinds of motoring offence that equate to violent crime, such as drunk driving (as opposed to "a bit over the limit") and genuine dangerous driving.

However, I would imagine that most of the rest of the difference stems from the fact that women in general drive fewer miles, and drive at different times of the day and for different purposes.

It's comparable to the position where women only on average are paid 80% of what men are, but this is because they tend to do different jobs, not that they're paid less for the same jobs.

What we would need to investigate is whether women who are 30,000 miles a year sales reps (for example) have better safety records than men who are 30,000 miles a year sales reps driving similar vehicles.

I must say in my experience some women, rather more than men, seem to have very limited driving abilities and are only prevented from being a serious safety problem by the very limited use they make of them.

Regards,

Peter

Right MUSH!

This is the WILD one again (and I did not break in to his office cos he is sat at the other desk reading his BMJ/Lancet thing! (But I really know he has a golfing mag in-between the covers! )

Got his permission this time (and I only really have the time to "play and annoy people" on one channel -) on grounds that you want the view of a REAL WOMAN and I am ONE!

Right Mr IAM Speeeeeeedy Limit Peterkins- who thinks speed is livin' the high life! (Though you must have read my sparrings with "Madcop who does "gone" orf on one when he reads my rantings there" on the other channel - munch? (or whatever it is you call yourself there! )

Limited driving abilities - MOI? Liebchen - have RoSPA gold doo-dah - and drive car rallies abroad and I can show you men a thing or two on a track day - anytime mate! Like the nerd (my eldest cousin) blew my student allowance one year on a powerful set of wheels - a mean and powerful motorbike and my parents were a just little bit narkied when I took my new "boyfriend" home for the weekend! Especially when they found out how much I paid for him and what my overdraft looked like! Got sharp lesson in budget management for long time afterwards!  (Cornered well around St Gallen though!)

My firm? Equal opportunities employer. All our reps got invited to LanCASH£££Re's speed course! Men and women! Prangs? The men have all crunched a car once - their fault. The two women - both travel to our plants in Europe - none at all! All are IAM trained as well - but all managed to get pinged in Lancs at 34-35mph - according to Personnel.

Parking? Never ever had problem there but seen plenty of male numpties try to squeeze their BMW into space for Reliant Robin!

Supermarket? Liebchen - the only people who leave shopping trolleys lying around are you male lot - who expect us to clear up after you! And it only men who seem to think that car parks are main roads with 30mph limits and never ever apply COAST there. Not do they seem to think that people may just want to park there cars there! And it is MEN who hold up the flow of traffic trying to squeeze into that little space for the shopping trolley by the entrance to my local Tescos. (And when they get there - can they steer a shopping trolley???? NOPE! )

Hesitation? If I see a space or opening - it is mine  I go for it - courteous aggression my RoSPA man told me! In other words - give them the dazzling, sexy smile!

Indicating incorrectly - seen all numpties do that! Was behind one today- and he was male - one of those numpties who is bald but wears a little ponytail at the back - as I observed when he parked up in TWO parking spaces at the supermarket and then drove his trolley into the shelves once inside  (Twazak chose the one mit the dodgy wheels!)

Travelling at slow speeds? Pranging car on garden post or garage door? The kids moved them OK!

But - some women only drive the kids to and from school in inappropriate cars - there is not much room in at school gate for those 4x4 with bull bars - as they seem to use! Then on short journey to part time job in office. Then on short journey to supermarket (which really is only justified if you plan big shop and cannot carry) But you could argue that for some men - accountants, computer nerds, who just drive to work in traffic jam, sit at desk all day, and then drive home in traffic jam. Who do not go out to track day at weekend, do not get out and about at weekend either - and when they go on hols - plane, beach and bar! And who have never bothered to even re-read the HC, the little yellow book of "Knowing Your Signs" or the DSA book for new and experienced standard drivers called "Driving". So to that extent would agree with Mr SpeedyLimitPete of the high life   - that less miles you drive - less experience of numpties you come across. You only gain the experience of dealing with the numpty by driving mile-upon mile on same roads as they do - and they are part of road condition unfortunately for us all! And the trouble is the numpty is always unpredictable - which is why IAM et al hammer principles of COAST (and another reason why we should have assessments every so often to refresh the skill of COAST)

Monthly blues? PapaUmauschl!    You do have stereotypical views!

Mad Doc does not sport any monthly bruises apart from the ones he got in the delivery room on each occasion!!

WildCat (who is in her husband's den with his permission this time! ) and only because PapaUmau would like one of the REAL WIMMIN to respond!)[/b]

Liebchen = 'Sweetheart', I believe!

As for the figures about women being safer drivers, I had to admit that I was puzzled. It'st rue that there are dangerous male drivers out there - 'boy racers' spring to mind - but from what I've seen on the roads generally, it seems to be women making mistakes more often. This is probably me just viewing things with my sexist male chauvinist specs on, of course! Still, I guess it puts an end to the 'Bloody women, can't drive' conversations - although I had to laugh when I saw the one area that men were better than women was parking!

Also worth noting that women drive on average about half the distance of men. All this is according to the figures I saw, which were in the Grauniad I think.

Listen mein kleines Kindchen     !

Und you are right - it means "Sweetieheart"

You live in Cumbria - nicht? Probably me in the Jag behind your little Corsa (is it?) this morning en route to Motorway!

You won't last long in Oxford with male chauvinist specs on! Those girlies down there - and you will meet one of our young girlies down there in October in Freshers' week  She will teach you all about driving fast and loose - as she fully intends to live outside college zone so she can have car! And all of us can park our cars on proverbial fivepenny piece!

But then again - you are probably meeting those wimmin on way to local primary school and hairdresser! Then again - if you are in driving to a school in LanCASH£££Re - you will probably be behind all those wimmin on 6-9 points as excessive scam watching leads to error!

Heard on grapevine that Lancs Speedy Course invites more wimmin than males - cos wimmin get copped as just overs and men really do justice to NIP form!

Yo TonyOut! Fancy seeing you here as well! Small world - ain't it?

WildCat (posting on Mad Doc's computer this time with his permission!)

I don't think these stereotypes help. Seen plenty of men commiting the 'crimes' you attribute to women, and fair number of women committing your so called male 'crimes'. I think there are good and bad within both genders.

And... personally? -- never found parking a problem :D

Seem to recall some insurance survey with similar findings (and it was some years ago now, so no flames please ladies :) ). It said that women have more low speed, minor damage tap-it-out-in-an-hour-or-so claims than men, but men tended to go the whole hog and write the car off completely. Maybe the male car wreckers thought they were doing the job properly? :?
Wildcat on the Mad Mog's computer again \"\" wrote:

Nah mate. That's socks you're thinking of.

Know some very good women drivers, and some bloody scary ones. Scary ones include those who want to be better than blokes and drive even faster than the male idiots (er, can't see how that's better, but never mind), those who rarely use top gear because they think about 45mph is good enough for almost everywhere, and one who seems to get the nearside wing mirror changed every season to stay fashionable. Or maybe she just drove too close to a row of parked cars again :P. I really, really hope the person concerned doesn't read this, or I'll be in the warm n' smelly for months.
Got to admit, the good ones outnumber the scary ones, and have noticed more bad habits when I've been the passenger of male drivers than female. Maybe women just tend to be a bit more level headed than us men and take fewer risks. Maybe I just need to re-read Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus in case I've just dug myself a big, deep hole.

Could well have been, were you the one who raced past me at the first opportunity? ;) Hehe! (red L-reg Corsa btw)

Ooooh, which college is she going to? Starting this year or already a student?

:O I hadn't thought of doing that. Quite like the idea of living in college really, at least to begin with!

Mad Moggie wrote:

I'm sad to say I can't. Well, I can get into a small space (small car helps, although no power steering makes it hard work!), but I often have to shuffle back and forward a bit to get sufficiently close to the kerb. Still, it does the job!

It is indeed a small world if you managed to recognise someone you've never met on a road that's travelled by tens of thousands each day! :D

Heh, the scariest ride I ever had as a passenger was in the car of an acquaintance's mother.. She drove exactly at the speed limit for the entire journey - she never slowed down for any corners! It was an effort of will to prevent myself holding onto the seat for my life!

Edit: And the journey was along a quite windy A-road, too.

I will say you are driving yourselves into Black Hole here! (says the Wild One who has broken into his den whilst he is out again! But this thread is for me - ain't it?)

Socks, junk, toilet seats left up! eh? eh? You have met the Mad Doc in person! (And his sons who all take after him! ) Fssst! You men  are all the same - expect us to clear up after you!

And whilst he was having fun on that golf course - Wonder Woman here had .... broken into his den, hacked into his computer (his security codes - pah! Childsplay and still are    !), made numerous rantings on this site under his alias  , sorted out squabbles in kitten corner, baked bread, cleaned house, picked him up from 19th hole, and had his evening meal on the table!

But I will let you off Gatsobait - at least you acknowledge that more super wimmin on road than bad ones - and the same is true of er.....men! As for your crack about the wing mirror ----Did you not know this-?-- Vital for us fashion-conscious girlies to change to next season's style - and in any case --how do you think we adjust the lippy whilst on the move! That is what it is really there for ain't it!

Und mein kleines Kindchen - middle-aged wimmin eh! Bet you got

"Listen Sonny - It's the speed limit OK!"

But you get old farties that do that tooo!

Und Kindchen -racing past Corsas on my way to work at first opportunity is fair sport! It could well have been me (or even him as he drives a Jag too) as that car was indeed red - and you see same cars every morning on the commute!

Our girlie (daughter of yet another cousin) will be Fresher at St John's. She is completing gap year at moment. You will probably get to know her as she is suffers from severe petrolheadedness!

The WildCat Burglar who is likely to get into bother again - but who has got his MadShip's dinner ready anyway!

Time for cunning plan ....

...Wine, flowers, candles, soft relaxing music, slinky dress Liebchen!  (That might get me out of bother???? :? )

Or cousins might arrest me for impersonating my husband!

Hmmm! Charming him with promise of things to come to get out of hot water? You are still tango-ing with trouble, Sweetheart!

------

Mike! Short German lesson from layman who learned it from them and school (ahem tooo long ago!)

Kind = child.

They add -chen/ -lein - (and -l (Swiss) to mean "little" or "small"

She is calling you "small child" literally - but really translates as "youngster"

I.e. Lieb = Love - So "Liebchen" literally means "Little Love" nut they use it for "Darling" and "Sweetheart"

Mad = Maiden So "Madchen" means "girl" (from little maiden)

Frau = woman/wife Fraulein is thus "little woman" and thus "Miss"

Wimmin!
