if banned for totting up 12 points for speeding in less than 3 years would you have to re-sit the test. and if so, would you have to do just the practical or the theory aswell.

and how long is the ban likely to be, between 6 - 12 months? or less if you have good mitigation for needing a license for work etc?

No, you don't have to resit your test. You will only have to do that if banned for a more serious offence such as dangerous driving or a higher-level drink-driving offence.

A totting-up ban is a minimum of 6 months, although you may receive a shorter ban if convicted of a serious speeding offence (more than 30 mph above the limit).

It is possible to escape a ban if you can get a good solicitor to plead hardship on your behalf - but you are then driving around with 12 points on your licence and another offence will result in a ban.
