if banned for totting up 12 points for speeding in less than 3 years would you have to re-sit the test. and if so, would you have to do just the practical or the theory aswell.
No, you don't have to resit your test. You will only have to do that if banned for a more serious offence such as dangerous driving or a higher-level drink-driving offence.

and how long is the ban likely to be, between 6 - 12 months? or less if you have good mitigation for needing a license for work etc?
A totting-up ban is a minimum of 6 months, although you may receive a shorter ban if convicted of a serious speeding offence (more than 30 mph above the limit).
It is possible to escape a ban if you can get a good solicitor to plead hardship on your behalf - but you are then driving around with 12 points on your licence and another offence
will result in a ban.
