Drove down through there on friday at about 6ish,

there was pretty light free flowing traffic yet the VSL was still active.

worse than that was the change from 60 to 50 to 60 to 50. Now I think I noticed the changeover pojnts but I can't be sure. That is pretty naughty and is going to catch a lot of people out.

you see the vsl set to 60 and adjust your speed accordingly you don't expect changes and theres nothing to warn you.

And that, unfortunately, is what they're counting on.

Apart from bloody great signs above the carriageway, of course.

And why should you not expect any changes?

Asuming they are exactally the same system as the M25, if you see the limit change the cameras must be off for at least 1 minute from the point of changing.

Also, if any light making up the limit sign on any sign on the gantry is off when it should be on, or on when it should be off then the camera must not opperate.

Or so I read in the PSDB Speedmeter Handbook. Not seen it in law but it's most likely a condition of type approval.

If you do get caught and you think there is more than one camera on the gantry you could go back and get caught by the other ones, then you would have proof that they are operating against their type approval conditions.
(although you'd really want to be sure it is exactally the same system and the conditions are the same before doing that! )

there is only 1 reason why the vsl is there enforced by cameras.

Where a matrix signal displays an advisory speed on a motorway it is just that advisory, and 99% of the populus dont even react to this. where a vsl displays a speed it is mandatory and is therefore enforced.

There are similar systems all over Europe in the uk we are a bit slower in implementing ideas and public acceptance takes longer.
