Yet another piece in the "Men" of 15 Feb

Rashid Razaq reports....and I think this would apply across UK and not just Manchester...

Quote:

According to a survey - potholes cost Manchester drivers £42m in repairs each year.

A fifth of all drivers nationally have reported potholes to the councils and a third say nothing was done to rectify the problem.

One in Ten drivers has reported damage to their cars after driving over a pothole in the last three years - and many do not even realise their car's safety has been compromised by potholes and large humps....

Esure.com has discovered £7000 m of insurance repairs due to pothole damage - and say the damage to axles and suspension can cost £1000 to repair... :yikes:

They blame cuts in council budgets .. :yesyes:

One third of adults inthe survey reckoned the state of roads is worse - with repairs to residential and rural roads being very much underfunded.

The findings support the AA' previous road report which found 40% of B roads were atriciously maintained and are getting steadily worse.

The AA also claimed that authorities paid out £100m in succesful claims agains road traffic accidents caused by poorly maintained road surfaces

Hmmm :scratchchin: Speed camera.... solves nowt... dollop of old fashioned tarmac and ... ? RTTM .... sounds about right then...

Paul - the body mentioned below may be useful source of info? You may already be in touch...

The Asphalt Industry Alliance - campaigns for more investment in road maintenance - have found North West in particular (and it included Cumbria  ) have an increase of 121% in visual defects over prevuous 10 years and 139% increase in claims for damage to cars and ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS due to road strictural conditions over past ten years

Hmmm - and yet they rely on scams...

If you know of any dangerous roads in North West - "MEN" asks you to contact

on

newsdesk@men-news.co.uk

or phone 0161 211 2468[/quote]

Paul - this is a another area to explore ...perhaps?

Just last week I almost hit an oncoming vehicle while swerving to avoid a particularly nasty pothole on a local road.

From my contacts in the Insurance industry, I know of £20,000-£30,000 cars that have been WRITTEN OFF due to chassis damage caused by potholes. Stories of them causing airbag deployment and all sorts of other nasty stuff.

And if you think it's just a case of budget cuts, think again. Many councillors view potholes as a form of traffic calming and purposely order them to be left in place.

I wonder if that explains all the unmade roads in the Bromley area?

There is no doubt in my mind that Britain has the worst maintained roads in the developed world. If the wealth of a country and the condition of their roads were taken into account we are probably among the worst.

People don't realise just how bad things are until they go abroad, as they think of the poor maintenance as normal. When I went to France and the Canary Islands I was shocked by just how good and smooth the roads were; the worst roads in Gran Canaria simply had rough tarmac, not patches and potholes. They can even afford to put a streetlight at the ends of the driveways of many rural properties!

Even visiting places like Morocco I am still relatively amazed. On many of the routes that I traveled on the surface was similar to in Britain. This is not one sided; Morocco also have some pretty rough roads! However, they aren't the fourth richest country on the planet. Think about the amount of tax we pay too, and how much it has increased over the years.

You would think that the sueing culture would have made our roads and pavements smoother. Damn, the one good thing it could have done, and it didn't!

Strange - junction of my road with another ,there's a spot in middle of road that regularly gets potted ( is that part of verb to creat pothole) --our county roads dept are very nice when we report a hole - their attitude is that al drivers should report - that way they can do more and keep the cost down . Me - i'm cynical - our county councillor hates humps/bumps cameras and holes in road.(oh and stupid roads people)

Well, I have had several interesting experiences reporting pot holes.

Wiltshire has a GIS system that you can use to report problems - put your "splat" on the map and report the fault.

I reported one bad pothole in the center of Swindon (responsibility of the BC). I said it could cause a dangerous problem for motorcyclists. It was fixed within 24 hours.

I reported another one on J16 M4 sliproad - this is Highways responsibility. It took them 9 months to fix it. It was a bloody great hole, and I know of at least 3 other people that reported it.

So hats off to Swindon BC for a change!

Southampton City Council bought an expensive piece of machinery which tells tham about the condition of the road.

Maybe they're all blind!

Some roads are so bad that they cause you to lose control of your vehicle, such as a potholed surface on a tight corner (where ten seconds later I would have hit a bus!).

The anti-car lobby make me sick. They advocate allowing local roads to degrade into potholed nightmares little better than dirt tracks. They encourage the introduction of speed humps and "cushions" all over the place. Then they complain when people start favouring 4x4s as their means of transport.
