Yet another piece in the "Men" of 15 Feb
Rashid Razaq reports....and I think this would apply across UK and not just Manchester...

According to a survey - potholes cost Manchester drivers £42m in repairs each year.
A fifth of all drivers nationally have reported potholes to the councils and a third say nothing was done to rectify the problem.
One in Ten drivers has reported damage to their cars after driving over a pothole in the last three years - and many do not even realise their car's safety has been compromised by potholes and large humps....
Esure.com has discovered £7000 m of insurance repairs due to pothole damage - and say the damage to axles and suspension can cost £1000 to repair...

They blame cuts in council budgets ..

One third of adults inthe survey reckoned the state of roads is worse - with repairs to residential and rural roads being very much underfunded.
The findings support the AA' previous road report which found 40% of B roads were atriciously maintained and are getting steadily worse.
The AA also claimed
that authorities paid out £100m in succesful claims agains road traffic accidents caused by poorly maintained road surfaces Hmmm

Speed camera.... solves nowt... dollop of old fashioned tarmac and ... ? RTTM ....

sounds about right then...
Paul - the body mentioned below may be useful source of info? You may already be in touch...

The Asphalt Industry Alliance - campaigns for more investment in road maintenance - have found North West in particular (and it included Cumbria

) have an increase of 121% in visual defects over prevuous 10 years and 139% increase in claims for damage to cars and ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS due to road strictural conditions over past ten years
Hmmm - and yet they rely on scams...

There are some roads in Manchester and Oldham where people have died because of pot holes - a pot hole can destable both motorbikes and bicycles more than a car
