This from an email list from someone in the industry in Germany:

1997 .74
1998 .63
1999 .69
2000 .69
2001 .57
2002 .63
2003 .59
2004 .51
2005 .47

These will be fatalities per 100 million vehicle km.

I've eventually found the stats in the transport statistics. Death rate on motorways is 0.1 per 100 million vehicle km. Over all road types and users it seems to be 0.5 per 100 million vehicle km.

Death rate for pedestrian casualties is 0.1 per 100 million vehicle km too.

Document is here:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/d ... =14478&l=5

I missed ours said per 100 million vehicle km so I have added that back in. Previous comments I made are totally wrong so it looks like the german autobahns are safer than our motorways if they're only 0.047 per 100 million vehicle km.

Our overall roads fatality rate in 2004 (latest) was 6.46 per bkvm - I'm not entirely sure why the figures Teabelly found were slightly different.

The German figures are quoted per 100 million vehicle km, so in the same terms our overall fatality rate was 0.646 (difference between 100 million and billion).

Our motorway fatality rate over the same period (per bvkm) was:

1997 2.33
1998 2.03
1999 2.30
2000 2.14
2001 2.24
2002 2.42
2003 2.34

from: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/which.xls

I haven't worked out the 2004 figure, but the critical issue again is that the Germans are improving and we are not.
