at £80 per vehicle this is around 12000 vehicles that have chosen to compleatly ignore the law and chose there own limit, Maybe it would be a good idea to 1) Increase the fine to say £200.
2) Increase the points to six.
3) for letters to be sent to insurance companies informing the insurers of thier clients dangerous behavior.

There is no other area of criminally neglegent behavior that would be so acceptable to the chattering classes that use this form, drunk and disrderly, Asbo's, burgelry ect ect .

My friend has a similar opinion and I had the misfortune to spend the day with him at the wheel of his car yesterday and have to say his driving was dreadful verging on dangerous.
And like you he was obsessed with speed limits yet strayed over several times through inattention which I gleefully pointed out.
He may well have been under in the main yet showed some of the worst tailgating I have ever seen to which he was blissfully unaware.
I bet you anything you speed at times and if you say you don't then I dare say you are a liar.
I personally think you are trolling and should get a life but if I am wrong may I suggest you take a day or two to educate yourself by studying what this site contains.

How about looking at the actual law itself that's being enforced.

By the way, when are you going to start replying in threads as opposed to just starting your own ones all the time and leaving it at that?

There is no other area in law where normal behaviour is on the border of legality. You do 30mph and you're within the law - do 30.1mph and you're breaking the law. That is, you're always 'almost' breaking the law.
You don't 'almost' rob a bank, or 'almost' mug someone now, do you?

Oh, and do learn how to spell!

Download Yahoo toolbar for IE6 - doesn't that have a spellcheck built in?

Or learn to spell and use punctuation.

Absolutely - and no other law that requires constant vigilance for mere compliance.

A very good point. To take another angle, when the limits around here were arbitrarily lowered by our local knit-your-own muesli brigade (aka the County Council), a stretch of road I frequently use was changed from NSL to 30 mph overnight.

So trundling down said road at 55mph one day was the act of a sane, safe, law-abiding pillar of society. :)

Next day, after the change, if I were driving at 55mph I would be branded by some as an anti-social, selfish, child-killing menace for whom hanging would be too good. :(

Why? The road itself hadn't changed, the level of traffic remained the same and my driving skills hadn't got any worse (or better).

Speed limits need to be sensible.

Go onto any motorway at any time of day or night there are thousands each day who quite clearly are not just breaking the law, but get up every single morning with the intention of breaking the 70 mph limit by 15-30mph.

The will stop at nothing in thier law breaking and show no regard for the people whom obey the law "they know better" "they are expierienced drivers" until ...........CRASH!!!!

I'd much prefer to use something that isn't officially classed as both Spyware & Adware thank you

For those that need it, ieSpell has a much smaller footprint and does exactly what it says on the tin & nothing more.

..and how many of them crash?
The vast majority of serious motorway accidents happen within the speed limit, and the vast majority of fatal motorway crashes involve HGVs - which are speed-limited to 56mph.

..maybe even the "sensible majority"????

(sorry, couldn't resist that!)

Funny then that our motorways are the safest roads in the world, with under 2 fatalities per BILLION vehicle kilometers. Yet many millions of people are exceeding the speed limits every single day. In fact half of all car drivers are exceeding the motorway speed limits on average at sample sites.

Do you REALLY think that comonplace behaviour can be used to distinguish exceptionally rare events?

How about looking at the reasons WHY there are so many prosecutions?

A law that is being broken THIS much obviously lacks credibility.

Increasing the penalties will not address the credibility problem, and could have undesirable side-effects such as more people driving without insurance or driving while disqualified.

Unless you plan to start shooting people, fear alone will not ensure compliance with laws that many consider to be unjust. The benefits to society have to be more clearly demostrated than what they're being at present.

Again you have to ask why?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you - this is the basis of any social structure. I would not like to be on the receiving end of drunken verbal abuse, I would not like my house being broken into. But I really don't give a damn if someone drives in front of my house doing 40mph, as long as they exercise due caution. There are no double standards here.

So why do you stick around? You clearly have nothing of any value to contribute and you do not engage in any discussion. You are so polarised in you views and blind to the facts that you cannot respond to any of the comments made about your posts.

It seems that when you have exhausted all your "speeding" rhetoric you will have nothing more to say. Just goes to show the depth of your understanding, or lack of it.

All TSMs observations suggest is that the majority of drivers think motorway speed limits are crap.

They drive at a speed which most suits their mental condition, the road conditions, and a balance of fuel consumption vs journey time which will vary depending on that driver's current priorities.

Consequently, some drivers will drive within the limits, but I suspect because of fuel consumption interests rather than any respect for a pointless law, and others will drive slightly above the limits.

By your thinking, TSM, if all these people are "bad" because they do not respect that particular law, then doesn't the whole good/bad arguement become slightly meaningless? I mean, if everyone is criminal then good has no relevance.

Are you suggesting that all these people are criminally negligent? Are you sure? What about all the ones who are technically illegal but do not crash, because in fact they are not negligent, but perfectly vigilant towards real life hazards.

You see, most people recognise that driving within the law will not protect you, but avoiding banging into other objects will. It could be argued that legal compliance on the roads should not be the driver's top priority?

Mrs Civil Engineer works in insurance and in particular has gained considerable experience in claims investigation and recovery.......aka finding out whose fault it is and who the insurer can get their cash back from.

Exceeding the posted limit is not grounds for apportioning liability.

so the criminal negligence bit falls down i'm afraid!

You can't even get the standard speeding fine correct - try £60 rather than £80. If you're just gonna write comments to annoy everyone rather than contribute I'd suggest you at least try and research the very primitive basics first. Suggests to me that you don't even believe in what you're writing yourself.
