A Gatso speed camera installed temporarily at roadworks raised more than £1 million in fines, it has emerged.
The camera on the M62 at Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, caught 18,000 drivers speeding in an 18-month period.
It was installed in September 2003, when the speed limit was reduced from 70mph to 50mph while work was done on the motorway.
According to figures obtained by The Sun under Freedom of Information, motorists caught by the Gatso were charged £1,088,000 in fines.
Installation of the devices on a number of other motorways, including the M6 in Cheshire, the M4 and M5 near Bristol and the M11 in Essex, brought in hundreds of thousands of pounds at each site.
Temporary speed cameras have netted £7 million in fines over the past two years, the figures showed.
A camera on the M20 at Ashford in Kent caught 656 drivers in six days, generating charges of £39,390.
According to the Sun, all Gatsos across the country are set to raise a total of £130 million for the Treasury this year.
My comments:
And in addition to that we have a casualty reduction of......0
