Bully-boy clamper lived a life of luxury

A NOTORIOUS criminal car-clamper who plagued motorists lived an astonishing life of luxury after making up to half a million pounds from his victims.
Gordon Miller wore a £3,000 Rolex watch, drove an expensive Mercedes convertible and owned a string of properties while bullying cash out of Portsmouth motorists. Police believe Miller made an incredible £529,683 through criminal activities.

The 40-year-old's main tactic was to threaten motorists he had clamped and refuse to let them go until they had paid extortionate amounts of cash.

The staggering estimate of Miller's wealth came out at a three-day court hearing at Portsmouth Crown Court which was set up to decide how much of his money should be paid back.

The clamper, who was jailed after being convicted of seven counts of blackmail, is believed to have £253,410 worth of 'realisable assets', including his homes, car and watch, which could be seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The confiscation hearing was adjourned for Recorder Jeremy Stuart-Smith QC to consider the evidence. He will return at a later date to rule on how much money Miller made through criminal activity and how much he should pay back.

They should chop his legs off!

This guy actually tried it on with a friends son around 3 years ago when he "ruled the roost" in Portsmouth with regard clamping...after a short discussion with my friend & I, he instructed his employees to release my friends son's car without penalty

In short though, yes the guy is a bully and relied solely on his intimidation tactics working with whoever fell victim to his methods where alleged illegal parking had taken place.

I think I encountered this guy a year or two ago while working at the DVLA building in Portsmouth - a real arsehole.

I wonder what the correct course of action is when faced with an illegal clamper?

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know what size of inverter would be required to run an angle grinder?

But I already own an electric one, and have been looking at inverters anyway so that I can run other stuff from it. Laptop chargers and the like mainly. I don't intend to run a kettle to make a brew whilst on the M6 (you can get 12V kettles for that ;) )

Seriously though, I would love to see one of these illegal clampers try to bully someone only to find themselves confronted by a very sharp very powerful angle grinder I've encountered enough police officers who would turn a blind eye to this sort of thing but as a last resort you could just cut the clamp off instead. ;)

Depending on the wattage of your grinder, I doubt very much that you'll be able to get an invertor large enough. That and you'll melt your car electrics. A 600W grinder running at 12V (assuming 100% efficiency through the invertor) will draw 50A

As I work with all this gear, we've just tested a 1KW resistive load on a 12V 1KA inverter. This draws (as expected) 90+ amps. A motor load for the angle grinder will be a problem and probably the 600W mentioned will be about the maximum for this inverter due to power factor.

90A for a few minutes should not worry a car battery too much as these are typically 50Ah+ in most vehicles.

Tapping off directly from the battery terminals will solve that little problem.

Clamper gets clamped

BRITAIN’S most notorious wheel clamper gets a taste of his own medicine yesterday.

Gordon Miller, 39 — twice jailed for clamping crimes — was fuming as HIS Vauxhall Zafira people carrier was immobilised for out-of-date tax.

Miller grudgingly stumped up the £80 fine to National Car Parks officer Martin King after a long row near his home in Portsmouth, Hants.

Mr King said: “He’s getting his just deserts.”

Bully Miller — in The Sun last year after he was jailed for blackmailing drivers — flexed his muscles yesterday, above, and claimed: “I’m not bothered.

As they say, what goes round comes round. :D

This critter should do the job!

Thinking of getting one myself.....

Should get at least 30 mins running time out of the average battery and still have enough to start the car. Failing that just keep the engine running. There is enough protection in your alternator to stop you cooking the charging circuit.

Anyhow I want to know how much of the fine is going back to the victims!
