Now, this road - for a suburban area - is wider than usual with excellent forward visibility. The road was quiet (around 2.00 p.m.). There were no pedestrians in the immediate vicinity. Traffic was light.
However.........
Roadworks have just commenced along this stretch of road, and one lane has been completely closed off to traffic that would usually approach the town centre. So it is now a one-way system for traffic leaving Stafford. There were no workmen, no heavy plant in operation, no changes to the road surface, no traffic management system in place. Just.........cones.
New posted speed limit?
10mph.
Do me a favour
Ah Silkmore Lane!
The current traffic management going with the roadworks is on of the most complete pieces of insanity I have ever come across.
It has indeed been set up for the duration as "a one-way system for traffic leaving Stafford" - without any consideration for the large number of residents in the area.
Stafford's road layout means that anyone inadvertently turning into the road is faced with a complete 5 mile circuit to get back to where they started! Mrs Beard had to do this tonight when she decided to visit the Coop on that road and had not realised the nature of the roadworks. (We live near there but are not directly affected) In tonights temperature in heavy traffic it went down like a lead brick.
If there is a problem between J13 and 14 on th M6 Northbound, gridlock will occur as all traffic will attempt to cross Stafford via the A449.
