Anybody know what the new cameras are for, situated all the way along the new A249 dual carriageway and over the new Sheppey bridge between the M2 and Sheerness.
They look like SPECS cameras, only they're painted dark blue and not as high mounted, and they're focused on white spraypainted dots, one in the middle of each lane and in both directions.
No new warning signs have been erected to indicate speed detection and the road carries a 70mph speed limit. :?
Any thoughts?

Dark blue?

Doesn't that make them Trafficmaster, the jam-warning service?

I recall someone saying that Trafficmaster works by using ANPR, to measure the speeds of vehicles over various sections of road - but I have no idea if this is authoritative or true.

The new ones are, they are the large units on a pole, often with an aerial on top. I think the gantry/bridge mounted units just use radar to detect the instantaneous speed.

Not sure what the blob might be for, maybe to detect if there is standing traffic at that location?

Traffic master does indeed work by ANPR, however, it only reads the middle 3 digits of your numberplate.
It then tracks the same vehicle between pairs of poles and reports the flow rate back by radio link (hence the antenna).

Ah, there you go:

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/p ... html_sbhd1

Quote:
Trafficmaster Detectors

Mr. Key: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether Trafficmaster detectors on motorways and trunk roads are equipped with lenses capable of reading vehicle registration numbers; and if he will make a statement. [101382]

Mr. Jamieson: The Trafficmaster units on the motorway and trunk road network use two types of detector. The model using an infrared beam is not fitted with lenses. The other type incorporates a camera that reads vehicle registration marks.

To preserve privacy, equipment at the roadside removes the first and last characters of each number plate read by the cameras. The remaining characters are

encrypted and processed to create a unique Identifier which is used to calculate the average speed of a batch of vehicles. No other information about a vehicle is recorded, and after two hours, the Identifiers are discarded.

The CC of Kent has already been calling for a reduction in the speed limit over the bridge:
