Their press launch info makes no sense.

A child is killed or hurt while walking or cycling in the UK every 31 minutes. At 20mph their survival chances are good. At 30-35mph they reduce to about 50/50. At 40mph death is an almost dead cert. Yet more than half of drivers speed in 30mph zones at any given time

So, 46 children per day are killed or hurt while walking or cycling. That's 16,790 per year. Of those 16,790, 106 died - 0.63%. Surely this proves that 99%+ of the incidents they are attempting to address occur at significantly less than 20mph, so all their cries for 20mph limits are pointless?

Paul, I know you have a page on this somewhere. Feel free to edit it in.

I even wrote to Mary Williams about it: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/brake.html

And there's this page: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/killspeed.html

But campaigners argue that there is little point in making children more aware of the dangers if nothing is done to make the roads outside their schools safe.

I am trying to work out the logic in this, but am failing dismally. Surely the more dangerous the roads are, the greater is the need for awareness? or am I missing something?

Also, even if the roads immediately bordering the school have a 20 limit and are plastered with cameras, chances are most kids that walk to school have to cross other roads before they get near the school. So safety education is still a necessity.

Still, I'm sure those 20mph cameras outside schools will do a roaring trade in the evenings and school holidays. I hope that these clueless "campaigners" are the first ones to get scammed.

That article on bikers is outrageous by the way. It deserves its own thread.

Having read it I get the feeling they know they have overstepped the mark but canot back down without losing credibility. The only answer is to keep on digging in deeper.

I hope the this blows up in their face. :x

I've just e-mailed them and asked for detailed break-downs of the factual statistical information used to initiate this outrageous smear campaign. Please feel free to do the same, pointing out that you are also a father etc.
